Hello,

Original Owner 90 S13 Hatch.

I just had a complete set of Energy Bushings replaced in my Car along with New Kyb Struts, Mounts in the front and rear. Also new control Arms, Tie Rods, Ball Joints (Front & Rear). My car has 200,000 miles and I was hearing a clunking sound in the rear when shifting along with other noises. Well after everything was replaced including the Energy Subframe insert. ($900 Labor for the job, he said it took 6 hours just to get the old bushings out and install the new ones on the components.

I still hear the noise in the rear plus others.

We had the car up and as I let the clutch in and out you can see the Subframe jumping all over the place. So now he says I have to replace the Subframe bushings that is going to be very expensive and involved. I looked up the Energy bushings and they only cost $18 for the set, this is not the inserts that came with their bushing kit. $18 seems so cheap compared to the price they charge for the S14. http://www.energysuspensionbushing.com/ ... ctid=30293

Any suggestions on Subframe bushings? Are these OK to use? I cannot remember I saw a post someone used a Z32 (that could be wrong).

Is there any other way to fix this problem then taking the subframe out like my friend told me? He was not sure if the subframe had to come out but thought it did

Would a Collar do the job?

The car is my daily driver that I have fun with every now and then. Sorry to sound dumb but I do not know anything about Suspension.

THANKS

THANKS

Collars may help that, I used the peak collars, took about 45 min to install, work great.

Now you should learn how to remove the subframe yourself and burn them out (if collars don't fix), then have new metal or poly ones pressed in. You could have done most of this work yourself and just had a shop press the new ones in.

You will need to re-align afterwords

I wish I could do work myself. I have two ruptured disks in my lower back and can't do that much of anything these days.

SO the Peak Collars are installed with the original bushings still on the car? Do they work depending on how much damage is done to the factory bushings?

I know he installed those Energy inserts that looked like they were a joke and I am sure did nothing.

I just found out That Energy part I listed above are the inserts and they do not make Sub-Frame mounts for the S-13. So now I am really do not know what to do. I found some Nismo bushings for $189 and then the cost of removing the sub frame will be to expensive for me to even fix now.

Nothings seems to work out these days...

Well they help by adding to the worn and spongy OEM bushing. They may fix your issue without pulling the subframe. Now with all that you paid, he should have seen they were shot.

You paid $900? WTF???
You could've bought solid bushings for 200, another subframe for under $100, then paid someone under $200 to install the bushings and swap out subframes.

It is more like a trade for his work. We both collect vinyl records and I gave him some rare LP's worth about $900 for him to replace all the Front and Rear bushings in the Energy Kit, replace tie rods, control arms, and the struts in the front and rear. He said it took about 18 hours and just using $50 an hour turned out to be $900. He said it took 6 hours to remove and replace the bushings on the rear and to install the Moog Ball Joint. And was working on the car about 12 hours to do the labor.

So would you say I got the short end of the deal?

you can also use the subframe bushing from an s14 that is what im doing right now the only difference is that you need to leave the metal sleave on mine got messed up so i am going to have to get some sort of washer to replicate the lip at the bottom of the whole

I ordered Isis aluminum subframe collars because I did not want to deal with removing the subframe. I think they will do the job and hold up for me.

Thanks for the help!

Just FYI S13 subframe bushings/collars, depending on what you decide to go with are pretty easy to find:

I am curious to know how the collars worked out for your fix, I have been looking for a similar answer to my situation. I have been trying to find out if collars will adjunct some horribly shot bushings.
