OK all you people, heres the situation:18, perfect driving record. In CA now, moving to Reno, NV after HS graduation (UNR)I want a decent car. Sharing a 96 Grand Am GT auto sucks. Decent power, good weight, but its an auto and I want a stick, along with more agility and better future options.

So Im thinking a S13. Does DOHC vs SOHC really matter for any real reasons? Besides most DOHC having fewer miles and the like...does it really matter?

For mods I was thinking some suspension work. Not sure what I would get, but coil-overs are a good starting point right? I dont want the best handling S13, but good enough for having fun with.

SR20DET is way out of my budget, but a -T option might be persued. Good kits are out that I can find and not have too much trouble with...and have better potential then the SR20. Far future a RB25DET might be used. Notice the "far future" comment.

So without doing a swap, nor spending tons of money, what kind of performance mods can be done? Just try to give a basic idea so I know cost and results.

Z32 brake upgrade is a real possibility. Stopping easily is always an important thing to be able to do. Thinking F/R and the Z32 MC.

Sounds are a big deal. I like my music, and while huge bass just pisses me off (and adds weight), some bass is a good thing, along with quality mid and high range. S13 has a standard DIN size stereo right?

cliff notes:S13DOHC VS SOHC big deal?cost for BPU type mods? And results?Standard DIN stereo? Speaker size?

EDIT: well what do you know?! Went back down to school for some minor BS stuff (switched a pair of dress pants) and on the way home...47 in a 30 ticket :( so remember that now...ticket = BAD...but I should be able to escape w/o too much bad stuff happening..first offense, and all. traffic school should erase any points and Ill just pay if its under $200...course, 17 over...*winces*

As far as speakers go, i say upgrade. I have JL's in the front, they sound amazing compared to the stock pos. For bass, dont go overkill. I unfortunatly did :(. I have 2 alpine 12 type-s's, and the're to much bass for my liking. ( unless your into loud, shaking gangsta rap)

i have heard that 89-90 and 91-93 cars about about the same speed wise, they make the same torque, the SOHC has 15 less horsepower but it is also lighter.

if its turbo, its expensive, there are no exceptions (except maybe DSMs, but thats really not on subject ;) )

If you want to stop faster, get stickier tires :D

yeah the 240sx has 2 standard DIN slots (you can even get one of those fancy smancy double din sterios that are ever so popular in japan)
