Ok, this '93 S13 I have is destined to become a circle-track racer. It's being built for a 500-lap Enduro in Montgomery AL. We are basically free to do whatever we want to the cars, but I am severely limited to $$. Safety equipment is about all I can spend more money on. This is pretty much the case with the rest of the field too, so I'm not too concerned with making the car faster. BUT, I want to do everything I can that DOESN'T cost a lot of bucks. One thing I can do is remove the exhaust system. I can run just a manifold if I want, which is what I've done on past cars. Is this a good idea with this car? I'm trying to get a powerband that goes to 6500 RPM. If I take off the exhaust, what do I do with the O2 sensor? Remove it, leave it on and sticking into fresh air? I'd like to find some way to lean this car out, as it (and my last two S13's) seems a lot richer then I'd like. Any other ways to lean this car out? Thanks in advance for any help.

Mike

i would unplug the o2 sensor all the way to tell the ecm to ignore it. it will default to rich but you can work around that by putting a resistor inline with the coolant temp sensor(i think). another thing to try is getting two 91 exhaust cams and using them in the motor(writeup in the ka section). another would be removing the swirl control valve along with the little butterflies(if you have a 91-93). advance ign timing a little with premium fuel. use synthetic fluids. if you can afford a header then running open header would prob net you some gains.

Pop your cat, advance your timing, modify the stock intake, use smaller wheels, butterflies are cool to remove, remove as many vaccum accesories as possible, if the car is strictly for racing, make a custom ram air, maybe port the intake mani while you are in there. 1) running open manifold would not only be incredibly loud and annoying, but also a fire hazard. The car runs rich enough that when it would hit the air it would burn the fuel, that is a problem, as you might imagine. Unplugging the 02 will have little effect on the engine other than making it run richer, and maybe setting a CEL, which could affect timing. JUST DON'T DO IT!
