ima go ahead and guess s14.
since the add says s14..

sure fire way to tell is by the distributor.
s13s us external coils, s14s dont. distributors are different.

other than that. the s13 dohc and s14 ob1 dohc KA are dam near identical from the outside.
there are a few ways to tell, but you wont be able to check for them in those photos.

now is it worth 700 bucks?
ha!

One more way to tell is if there are 2 bolts or 3 bolts on the top of the valve cover. The s13 ka has 3 bolts on top, and s14 has two.

It is an s14 KA. No 3rd bolt on top of the valve cover behind the 4th spark plug, like previously stated.

It's not worth $700 though.

your engine doesn't have a clutch fan? maybe that's why you need to replace it...

from what the post on craigs says its a 95 ka. so it has to be a s14 obd1
the clutch fan as how "numbnuts240" randomly brought up is the fan in front if the engine it is called the "clutch fan" im not exactly sure why its called that but it is. Its controlled by the serpentine belts which are driven by the cranks rotation thus cooling your engine to a certain amount, unless you have a fan shroud.

Now back to the engine. I would not buy this engine. it has a butt load of miles and who knows if the compression is good. unless the seller has a video of him doing a compression test.. i might think about it then. The miles itself are asking for gasket changes and a lot of work.
I would keep looking for something else. or just rebuild what you have. it might be alot more than 700 but you still might want to think about the shipping process and cost. in the end your alot safer and sure that your engine will work instead of guessing and loosing money.

It's a clutch fan because it works like a clutch. When coolant behind the water pump gets hot enough, it conducts the heat to a thermostatic clutch on the fan and makes it start spinning with the water pump pulley.

Unless you have electric fans you should have that fan. It's necessary for proper radiator cooling.

if all KAs fail on you then your best bet is SR. i like both engines... you can do just about anything to both.

thanks chris for the extra info :dblthumb:

My apologies to you xS-13x, but really you must understand that it's a little disconcerting to review that someone is looking into replacing their engine (assumingly), without the common knowledge that clutches don't have fans. Then, with the later statement of being new to the 240, well it really sounds as if you're new to "cars" in general if you don't know what a "clutch fan" is after being directed to the fact that that is what was pictured on the engine in question. No hard feelings, as I don't want to see someone get burned on a potential deal, nor get injured for lack of knowledge.

I would pay $400.00 imo not worth paying $700.

long blocks in my area go for $500 with a fresh rebuild on them so..... just food for thought.

long block consists of the assembled block with pistons and crank oil pans etc. and dressed head. but no manifolds or accesories

If he won't come down from $700 give him a few weeks to realize that nobody is going to pay that and maybe he'll rethink the price...

C'mon man, now we're just bench racing on a hope. Get it done and bring it to the track. God knows what I could do in a few months too ... fair 'nuff?
