S13 manual window regulator issues

Just purchased a new s13, previous owner used vice grips on the shaft for the window regulators, now new handles will not clip on as they rounded all the teeth off, I know we cant get new whole regulators anymore but the crank portion is seperate from the rest of the regulator and only attached by cables, has anyone ever tried swapping just that portion or popping the shaft off and replacing it with one from another vehicle? Would really like to not have vice grips on them anymore
