Okay guys, I know what the problem is, but I want to know if anybody else has this problem too. I've got a '90 240 with 141,000 miles on it and I am on my second trans. The first one was making a growl when I bought the car with 96,000 miles on it. I talked to a nissan guy at the dealership next door and he told me that it was the bearings and it was a simple fix. Well, the fix wasn't so easy after all but the bearings were the cause. The easiest way to tell is put it in neutral and let out on the clutch. If it makes a growl the bearings are bad. Anyways, as it was my first venture into a standard trans I screwed it up and it went out after 2000 miles( but the growl was gone). So naturally I bought one from the scrapyard for the low price of $250. Supposedly it came out of a car with 60,000 miles on it. The trans has done great until about a week ago when I notice that !@$%# growl that I am too familiar with. So, have any of you other guys had this prob. with the 5 speed trannies in these cars? I know it is a common problem when I go to a nissan mechanic and he tells me whats wrong with it before I am finished describing the complaint, but I'd like some feedback from youguys too, because I dont want to spend $1,000 for a rebuilt unit and I'm not going to put in a used unit once a year either.

Thanks guys,Phil

its the throwout bearing on your clutch, its bad, i have the same problem, but my mechanic says i can drive with it, mine only growls when the engine is cold. normally when you replace the clutch, you put on a new t/o bearning, i guess this wasn't my case when i bought my car.

if you want to rid yourself of the growl, do it, but you are fine until your clutch starts slipping, which who knows when that'll happen, ive been driving mine for 2 months, with alot of drifting on that clutch.

throwout bearing: growl or howl WHILE CLUTCH IS PRESSED DOWNpilot bushing: high pitched whine could happen any timeinternal trans bearings: growl or howl WHILE CLUTCH IS NOT PRESSED or WHILE ROLLING IN GEARthat helps determine which shaft is having the problem.

after you replace it, try taking yours apart. you may find it easy to rebuild. i dont know how mechanical you are. i do it from time to time. its really fun.

Like I said in the original post, I know what the problem is. There are 6 bearings in the trans alltogether 3 on the mainshaft and 3 on the countershaft not including the bushing on the output shaft. Usually it is the middle bearing on both the main and countershafts that makes the noise, you can hear most easily with it idling in neutral with the clutch OUT or while driving in 5th gear under light load, it will go away if you let off the gas. I have tried to rebuild one of these trannies(the original transmission from the car) and it didnt go well (it ate the 2nd gear synchronizer within 2k miles which is why I went with the junkyard trans). The bearings for them are rather expensive(at least to me) if you were to replace all 6 it would cost about $250 just for parts(the same cost as a junkyard transmission). My only question is how many of you have had this same problem? By the way, I fix cars for a living (just not transmissions) and the second time around I could probably rebuild the trans without any problems, but I am tired of taking it out of the car. Thanks,

Phil

What happened with the other transmission?

In Ebay you can find the OEM replacement parts much cheaper.I had the same problem that you described. Was the main countershaft bearing.

its not actually all that common. i am a nissan dealer tech and i have only seen one 240 come in like that. are you using the right gear oil? alot of the junkyards i deal with will give me free replacement in 30 days if the part sucks.

how much would it cost do you think to get the counter shaft bearing replaced? i already have the part.

it aint cheap. best bet would be to take the trans out yourself to save some labor. then take it to a transmission shop.

Well, when I originally asked the nissan guy next door he told me the answer before I was finished telling him what the car was doing. So I assumed that it is a fairly common problem. As for the junk yard transmission, it had a 6 month warranty. I have had it in the car probably about 10 months, but that still is too short of a time to have the same problem happen. I was running standard 75-90 gear lube, but I switched to 80-90 on my last service because we stock the 80-90 lube here at work but not the 75-90. (I work at a caddy dealer). Thanks,

Phil

eventually it will burn up your gear oil, make more noise, get lots of metal in your oil, etc. dealer labor would be like $450 or so.

My car is doing it too, and I have a used transmission waiting for me at a junkyard once I'm done with school. (1 month)
