i've searched around and found all kinds of options for upgrading from an open diff to a lsd diff, and i came across this write up http://www.teamgeko.com/id18.htm
i know you can use the z32 300zx rear diff but you need to figure out what to do about the output shafts being different. in this write up he used the s13 open diff 6 bolt output shafts in the 300zx diff. but he notes that the s13 shafts are shorter, but never lists any end results as to weather this setup works.

anyone know if this would be functional or would it not work?

I personally have tried to use open diff outputs on a vlsd and it will not work. One of the outputs has 2 sections of splines one for the carrier and one set that goes way further in that slides in to the vlsd. The open diff output wont go in far enough so the diff will still be an open diff, BUT WILL SLIDE IN. that doesn't mean that it works though.

I swapped the guts and stubs from a j30 vlsd into my open pumpkin. one stub has a little gap but other than that it works great. I shimmed mine and 12k later i cant complain. I do however need to replace both my rear tires, again!
