I've been looking for some LED replacement bulbs for my license plate and wasn't getting very far searching for the #89 bulbs. I found that they are also called BA15S bulbs...well..that's what some call the type of base the bulb has. I found some cheap 9 led BA15S bulbs on ebay that I thought I would share with everyone. I've searched on here and it seems like most make there own so this will be an easier fix for those that don't want to cut into the stock wiring. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/2X-9-White...wItem

And here is a picture:

Hope this helps some of you looking to change your license plate bulbs over to led's. I'll post some pics of mine once mine come in.

Be careful about LED plate bulbs if you need to get state inspections. I saw a guy come through with a set and get failed ( VA ) cuz they white light reflected off of the car blue because of the paint. He told the guy it was white light and showed the guy when he held a piece of paper under them. Inspector agreed then pulled the bulbs out. Ended up failing him because there was no DOT symbol or number.

They were cool bulbs. Like a retrofit for 'peanut' style bulbs. The base of them directly plug into the harness and had one led in them. The car owner was arguing that they were lexus OEM is250 bulbs and that that's why they worked in his scion and that he felt he shouldn't fail.

I doubt they will fail me for having LED license plate bulbs but I could be wrong. Last year when I got my car inspected the guy told me the bulbs in my half clear half amber front turn signal lights were too blue and I would have to change them to reg. bulbs before he would inspect the car.

Here is a crappy old pic of them:

I changed the bulbs for the inspection and went right back to the shop and changed them back to LED's.

Considering that all new Lexus cars use led license lights, and most new cars have led parking/brake lights I don't see how they can say anything or fail you. Tell them if they do that it would seem that the automotive market is regressing in terms of safety since most of them seem to be using it.

We should get a meet together sometime. I remember there was one at mt trashmore but i found out about it the day after it happened

It wasn't really a question of what type of bulb it was or whether or not it was Toyota/Lexus OEM. The inspector had a mis-placed stick in a certain place and was failing it because the bulb was in no way DOT marked or approved that he could see.

I drive a green 95. I'm usually around the pembroke area. I don't really talk to a lot of the local import guys. I know i definately don't know anyone in a vert. That Mt. Trashmore meet, I was stuck working that day .

I got my J30 inspected, and I have PIAA LED parking lights (hyper white color), and they didnt care or say anything. I also have blue colored "hyperwhite" front turn sigs and no one cares. But thats NY. Everyone is aloud to tint their lights, HIDS in fogs that blind everyone etc

My new LED license plate bulbs came in...but...the company shipped me 24v ones...blah!! But they just dropped another set in the mail for me free of charge so soon as I get them I'll add some before and after pics. It should be about two weeks for them to get here if they take as long as the others .

The way those inspections work is you must have the OEM equipment (including light color) for that specific car, not w/e is on a different car.

hehe...me either but I really like the look of the whiter, cleaner light of the LEDs for the number plate opposed to the yellowish dull light I'm getting now. I'm in the process of changing all my bulbs in my car over to LEDs...exterior and interior.
