i drove my car about 30miles from my friend brandon's house to an autopart store. i did not shut my car off when i went inside b/c i just put some music in my car and it is drawing 2 much power from my battery. anyway after i came outside, i noticed that the temperature was really high. i though it would cool down by itself when i start driving but it did not, it just kept going up.i have to stop and let my engine cool down about 15 min before i got on the road again.by the time i got to my house about 5 miles away, it started going up again.i got to my house on time and turn the engine off. i have a bunch of antifreeze in the radiator. the previous owner just changed out the water pump and thermostat. so what it is going on?

There is probably air in the coolant system.

Your best bet may be to drain down the coolant and start all over again with the filling of the coolant. Here's how I do it:1 - drain coolant2 - open the bleeder screw3 - optionally jacking up front of car helps to purge air pockets4 - fill system until coolant starts coming out the bleeder hole5 - close bleeder screw (not too tight; screw is easy to break off)6 - continue filling until coolant is at the bottom of the filler neck7 - do not put cap on the radiator8 - start motor; as coolant starts to warm up, you may see a few air bubbles9 - squeeze the hoses by hand to free up possible air pockets10 - put cap on radiator

ok. i try that and it seems to help a little bit but then i have another problem. it will not overheat on a freeway but once i get into local traffic and i start going a little bit slower, it will start overheating again. what should i do next?

What kind of fan are you using? If your using the stock clutch fan still it might be going bad. I mean it is a 17 year old fan after wards .

i think u let the car get too hot for too long, once it reaches H its gone dude. I think u blew the head gasket man. Not too sure but check for bubbles in ur coolent. u can burp it all u want but if its blown it won't work. happend to me and still trying to put my head back on and all together...too poor.

it doesn't have to smoke at all, my car didn;t and i was in denial for awhile. Open ur radiator cap and see if u see air in there once in awhile. If there is then its blown. Not to the point where its really obvious in the oil but all the pressure is being sent into the coolent system. It could just be a little crack in the gasket near a water jacket thats why itsn ot mixing alot, some coolent falls into ur cylinders but not to much harm unless u wait too long. Idk maybe i'm wrong but if it keeps over heating after bleeding it, changeing a thermostat, water pump or fan inspection then its blown. Plus i used to carry alot antifreeze in my car too lol.
