Overview:

Difficulty: ***

Time: ~ 1-3 hours

Cost: $85

Tools:

- 10mm and 8mm sockets wrench and ratchet- screwdrivers- wire cutters- needle nose pliers

Materials:

- Walbro fuel pump, available here.- shop rags- electronics cleaner

Procedure:

Start by going to your engine bay and removing the fuel pump 15A fuse in the fuse block near the battery. This will relieve the fuel pressure. Now crank the car and run it until it dies out. Remove the negative battery cable and reinstall the fuel pump fuse. Loosen the fuel cap also to remove pressure.

Pull back the trunk carpeting to reveal the fuel pump cover.

Use your 10mm socket wrench to remove the 4x screws holding the cover on.

Mark the position of the old fuel pump assembly to the lock ring.

Remove the inlet and outlet hoses from the pump with a pair of needle nose pliers and a Phillips head screwdriver. Excess fuel will leak from the hoses and connections, be prepared to deal with it.

With your locking ring and pump marked, use a 8mm socket to remove the fuel pump screws.

Now you can pull the fuel pump assembly out of the tank, have some rags handy to soak up the excess fuel.

Lay the assembly on some rags and cover the fuel tank to prevent FOD.

Remove the hoses connected to the old pump first.

you do not need to retain the old isolator.

Comparison:

install the new filter.

install the retainer with a flathead screwdriver CAREFULLY.

the Walbro pump comes with a new isolator, install it now.

hold the new assembled pump up to the rest of the unit and measure how much of the hose will need to be trimmed.

assembly with new pump mounted:

You will be doing some minor wiring duty to install the new pump; you will concern yourself with only the red and black wires for this job.

strip the wires and use butt connectors to attach the harness.

re-install your pump assembly in the reverse order of removal. re-attach your fuel lines and bolt down the covers. now is the time to clean any dirty electrical connections...

make sure your fuel pump fuse is re-inserted and re-connect your negative battery cable.
