s13 hud issue, wont always work

1989 240sx coupe
5spd
HUD.
stock it has a Kenwood cd player in it (previous owner installed it)

the HUD seems to come and go out every so often. if you tap on the dash sometimes it comes back, other times it stays out.
all the other lights work (HVAC,Glovebox,taillights) is it the capacitor that most HUD's have that go bad? it's just odd it's not always off.

any help?

Normal issue, search for HUD repair, its usually the HUD eletronic board that needs repair. But most just buy another cluster to replace it.

i had the same issue. i actually changed my cluster and hud unit. cut the wires by accident,so i had to solder them(and i can't solder for s***) but i got it done and it didn't work until i pulled my engine and reinstalled it. now it comes on when the car heats up. so ya change your unit but you don't have to swap the dash(finding an uncracked hud dash in the junkyard nowadays is like impossible..

The typical repair is replacing/resoldering a couple of diodes.

Or get ahold of broadfield. He's done some amazing HUD work.

Thanks guy's for the help.

i know we took the gauge cluster out a little bit. looked at the wiring, took the cluster apart. and played with the circuit board a little bit. everything "LOOKED" ok. we noticed if you touched the 2 circuit boards the lights would go out. then if you let go they worked.

we had a friend who does electrical board's for a living he touched the sodors up and still the same issue...
