As you know, the two are basically the same car under the skin, so the differences are in the details.
Well obviously looks are a very subjective matter.
On one hand, the hatch's lines flow better from front to back, giving it a sportier look. The tail design is unique and attracts attention and recognition (this can be good or bad)
The coupe, on the other hand, is more sedated, especially when viewed from the rear. Overall it's a longer, leaner car in appearance.
Functionality: The hatch is a clear winner in terms of cargo space. The coupe's excuse for a trunk and small pass-thru to the passenger compartment is a big minus if this is going to be your only car. My g/f 's sentra swallowed almost 3x as much stuff as my coupe during our last move.
Performance: The sports performance package was only avaliable on the 91+SE hatch. Sports package = springs, anti-roll, LSD, HICAS. HICAS cars are hard to find (for purchase or as doner for parts)
Durability: Many hatches have blown hatch struts - a bit of a pain. More troublesome is the rotting that occures underneath the hatch's foam spoiler (if so equipped). Water will find its way in and rust the hell out of the mounting points.
Condition of the vehicle is just as important as specifications. We are dealing with 10-15yr old cars. All the gizmos in the world don't make the car worth sheit if the vehicle had been abused or neglected.
My 2 cents.
Cheers
