so the other day i changed my front oil seal. Well after everything was back on i started it up and was running fine. Took it down the street to safeway and the temp gauge started to rise all the way, pulled it over and remembered i didnt bleed the coolant. After about 20 minuites of bleeding smoke started to come out. Decided to let it cool down and after 20 muintes tried to drive back home which was like 2 blocks away. The car was misfiring like crazy and massive loss of power. I noticed the gauge said lean the whole way home but who can really trust a gauge not set to ecu. Need help.

There is a chance you may need a new head gasket.

oh, and a proper water temp gauge.

you can get a pan of water and put the thermostat in it with a thermomiter. heat the water and see what temp the thermostat opens at and if it opens completely. only replace with genuine nissan thermostat or nismo. aftermarket thermostats tend to have a smaller opening.

First of all, not all aftermarket thermostats have a smaller opening than stock. I am running a Failsafe thermostat which is the same size as stock. It also allows coolant to pass even after the springs crap out because of the reverse housing, something no stock t-stat does. I have also known of many people that simply drill out the jiggle valve or drill a small hole next to the jiggle valve to allow coolant to pass after the t-stat fails. It also makes no sense to pay over $40 for a Nismo t-stat that still has to be replaced every few years anyway.

As far as running lean goes, double check the cam and ignition timing. Too much advance will run you lean causing overheating, improper cam alignment will cause both erratic firing and heating issues as well. Also make sure you have good spark in the correct order.

personaly i dont use a thermostat in my car unless its very cold out for acouple months... if it smokes like a train cream color'd oil heats really bad like red lining the temp gauge. an or exhaust coming threw the radiator miss firing deff the head gasket.. but if its none of thes or if its just over heating means its somthing u for got to do(didnt bleed the system like you said) for miss firing an no power. might of filed the cam sensor out. if its a 89-90 might of got coolent in the distributor
