for the brakes... on the piston there will be a + looking shape grooved into it. make sure that its straight vertical and horizontal to the top of the caliper. there is a little tab sticking out on the back of the brake pad that needs to slide into it. im pretty sure the e brake uses that for its function. if you just twist it back in and then slide in your pads they might not sit in there right and be angled, meaning that you only have partial friction surface riding on the rotor. give that a shot and report back.
as for the steering issue. jack up the car in the front, have a friend (doesnt have to be a friend, could be a grandma or 2nd cousin) wriggle the wheels side to side repeatedly while you look for things that might be loose or have play in them. you will find it that way. it sounds like it could be the bushings, but you wont know for sure unless you either replace them or wriggle the wheels. also replacing them may not fix the problem which is why the wheel wriggling is the best answer.
