Well, I just bought my first s13 hatch, and it needs a new clutch. I went ahead and ordered the OE replacement kit and it's almost time to put it in. I was wondering if this is doable with the car supported on jack stands, under the rear end, of course, because I don't have access to a full vehicle lift. Thank you..

Yeah, I did it with 2 jackstands and a floor jack a few days ago. Definately do-able.

well.... it SHOULD be doable in like 1-2 daysIt took me like 2 weeks because I had to work so much and when I was ready to surface the flywheel it was a weekend.. blah blah problems. But 1-2 days should be fine...

One thing i recommend though is this.....WHEN YOU GO TO PUT THE transmission IN... UNHOOK THE EXHAUST AND JACK THE FRONT OF THE MOTOR UP SO THE TRANSMISSION CAN GO IN THE SHAFT AT AN ANGLE!!!

I spent two days trying to lift the damn transmission in.. is impossible the car is too small... you have to angle the engine.

If ya want to speed things up a bit, you can just use a pry bar and a brick or two to pry the back of the engine down by the exaust pipe thats going into the catty converter. Use the frame rail to the left as a fulcrum point and the bricks to hold the lever end of the bar up when your moving the transmission in and out. It works great. and there's no taking the exaust apart. this is usuming your car is semi stock and your exaust manifold is torqued down to specs.

Well the only reason my exhaust was taken apart is because a mechanic guy said it needed to be and he unhooked it.. of course he left it unhooked and I had to hook it back up... guess what.. I have an exhaust leak :( I need to put the front of the car back up and get the bolts torqued down to spec

Read about my clutch install ordeal here.

This should be all the info you need, I ended up installing the transmission by myself with no special tools, only a jack, with the engine just like it is, not jacked up.

All in all it took about 5 days, about 4 hours to get to the point where the transmission is off, a couple hours to get the flywheel resurfaced/get the clutch torqued down and the throwout beaing in. And then 4 days to reinstall. :)

If I had done it my way from the beginning I would have been done in under 10 hours, first time with no FSM. Now I could probably do it in 6-7 total.

Also, I did not even touch the exhaust, it stayed completely in place.

man u must have little hands!!! or your a pro. I swear man I tried to lift that transmission in for HOURS! of course I didn't use a jack.. just my chest as the stand. And about the exhaust, I know it doesn't need to be unhooked, my mechanic guy did it I don't know why.

A pro wouldn't take 5 days to do it. :)

It's more just rotating it freely and shaking the rear of it. You can stick your hand in there and feel how close you are to stabbing it and move it accordingly.

ya... I was always RIGHT THERE MAN!!! less than 1/4 of an inch from going in... but all out of room. Sicne I was just underneath the transmission holding it up by myself I couldn't spare a hand to move the back around :(

Yeah that's where I was getting stuck for like 4 days, only like 1/2 a shaft away. What I did was set some foam pads on my knees and put my knees under the back of the transmission. Then I jacked the front up with the jack, I wasn't actually under the front of the transmission. So I used my knees to wiggle the back and I had both hands free to rotate the front. It went kind of slow because I had to keep adjusting the jack, but it finally went in. I was kind of diagonal to the transmission.

no grease should be used when replacing a clutch kit. every thing goes in dry.

the clutch kit parts them selve require no lubrication. now the obvious points do the fork pivot, the fork ends where it attaches to the t/o carrier do require lubrication

ya, those r the ones the manual said to grease up :) , none od the clutch parts themselves need it.

Yeah sorry for the confusion, I just greased what it said to in the manual, not the clutch parts themselves.

it should go way faster than five days. My friend did it in about 5 hours from start to finish, not too bad at all. it works MUCH nicer if you unbolt the swaybars and drop the front crossmember a bit...
