maybe the previous owner put a car alarm in it. =P i dont think any of them came with alarms to my knowledge. but i installed an alarm in my 240, and if i so desired i could have made it entirely invisible. easy to tap it into the horn if you dont have a siren. look around for an alarm brain, usually stuffed up under the drivers dash somewhere or under drivers seat.

kinda weird that it wouldnt have set itself off for a whole year though and then suddenly do it for no reason.

have you tried SERIOUSLY shaking the car? because i know if a sensor did actually set it off, its probably a shock sensor, and its probably configured very weakly so that it takes a lot to set it off. if a big truck went by nearby or a big bass system, that coulda done it. maybe the sensor was attached loosely for the past year but it got wedged somewhere and picked up the vibrations this time around or something.

i dont know. but as far as i know there's only 4 kinds of sensors: electrical (door opening), shock, motion, and glass-break (microphone). unless glass broke somewhere nearby it wasnt that. you would have noticed the motion sensor sometime in the past year. shock... well, coulda been, i mentioned that above.

otherwise your car is possessed ;D

some do have alarms, my brother's 1990 hatch does, the switch for it is located on the right side of the steeringwheel between the rear defrost button and the steering column, atleast thats where his is, its not exactly the most useful alarm, because as you have seen it goes off randomly, and once you get in to the car all you have to do is switch it off so it'll stop. I don't have anywhere to host the picture of it right now but I will eventually. it has 3 settings, On, Off, and Impact Off which obviously have their uses.

EricEDIT: I'm hosting them at my school account, will only be up for a few weeks at best

mine does not have a switch like that there, it has just a flat plastic cover panel... wierd .... mystery still unsolved

if there was a car alarm installed, and the switch or whatever is hidden, is there a place in the wiring i can check to see if it has been tapped into for the alarm?

that's interesting. mine has a flat piece of plastic there too, and on the right side is the rear wiper/washer controls (instead of that little sticker on yours...can't read what it says).

maybe it was a dealer special thing, and some dealers just didnt put the little switch there? i still advocate searching up under the drivers dash, there's gotta be SOMETHING

I just bought my 91 240sx LE a few days ago. It has a stock alarm, came with the original manual and everything. It says the alram is configured into the ignition and stuff. Yes the switch is on the right hand side of the steering wheel next to the rear windshield wiper button and its a manual.

doubt it, i have an FSM and it mentions absolutely nothing about alarms or even speakers/audio (besides general placement location of the speakers)

The S14 FSM has detailed explanations for testing and t-shooting the factory security system. No siren though just horn honking. I've never seen the factory S13 alarm that came in the LE vehicles, but it sounds like the same add on that they put into the Pathfinders at the dealership.

I agree, get on your knees with the drivers door open, use a drop light and take a peek under the dash, most installs are not so clever as to hide all of the components. Look for wires not run in split loom or wrapped in old electrical tape, they are usually a good indicator of the presence aftermarket system. You can also look under the hood for the siren, or near the battery's positive terminal for fuses that are connected there.

S13's were available with a dealership optional Clifford alarm. one of my parts cars had it, i asked around, and thats what i came up with.

What? Clifford has almost always been sold exculsively as and aftermarket product, even now! I wonder if some auto dealer just had a bunch of cars done at stereo shop to sell them with a security for a little extra profit.
