I've recieved my engine with ECU #63. As I know, this ECU is for red top with automatic. Will this still work with my black top?Or should I send it back and get the black top version?are there many differences between these two ecus?

thanks,

The deciding factor is the wiring harness. Do the wire colors at the ECU plug correspond with the S13 SR ECU pinout that's circulating around the net?

I'm not familiar with the 63 ECU, but if you say it's a redtop ECU, I'll take your word for it. If your wiring harness is not like depicted on the FSM, it's the kouki blacktop, and I have info on repinning the ECU plug. It's like 5 wires.

I have to buy the harness, mine is all cut up.So if I get the red top harness the engine should work correctly?

thanks,

I usually use a 63 auto redtop SR ecu. However for emissions I used an E5 manual blacktop ecu. People say the early blacktop ecu and redtop ecu are interchangable but I did notice differences. If you have a blacktop and are running a 63 you may get some odd stumbling levels at freeway speeds. It was hard to keep my car at freeway speeds when running my redtop with a blacktop ecu. It was running very lean and I had to use an SAFC to compensate.

I think the difference between the ECU's is the O2 sensors. Supposedly redtop and blacktop ecu's are different. http://www.store.yahoo.com/pha....html

Other than that there is very little difference between them. I would try to get the blacktop ecu either E5 or E6, there are blacktop ecu's numbered J4 or some other J (the auto version) but they need some repinning before working or else they will only fire one cylinder.

Try to get the proper ecu if possible.

K im kinda in a bind here. Blew my 95 S13 blacktop and trying to see if i can use a redtop using the E5 ecu. Pin outs should be the same rite? If it works for you...it should work for me the other way around.

Hmm this has me wondering.. I have a blacktop with a manual transmission and my ECU number is J7.. is that correct?
