Hey all,

Just installed a B&M shifter on my '89 s13. I guess I shoulda checked NICO first, cuz I think I got the "noisy" version. So...

1) Is there any way to reduce that whirring noise?

2) I had a heck of a time getting the old shifter/plate assembly off because there seemed to be a gasket or adhesive that held it in place. Nothing of the sort came with the shifter, nor was anything mentioned in the instructions. I torqued all the bolts as tight as I could, but should I have done something more to ensure a good seal?

i bought a b&m short throw shifter for my 89. if you bought it pretty recently, you have the revised version which should be less noisy. they started shipping the newer version, if i remember correctly, about 2 months ago.

I'm pretty sure the newer version did not come with a shift knob..because that's the one I got from PDM and they said its the revised one.

Well, mine didn't come with a shift knob, but it still makes some whirring noises, especially at higher rpms. is this just something to be expected?

I got it off of a yahoo online store, so I'm iffy on whether its the updated edition.

Cool. that's good to hear.

Just wondering: did any of you guys use a sealant when installing the base plate onto the transmission? The stock shifter base was attached with an adhesive.

I found that if I rest my hand on the shifter it actually makes MORE noise. Try a hands-off approach and let us know. Also, some noise is always going to come through, its the nature of the design and what gives it such a nice tight feel. It truly is the best out there.

Yes, I'm posting on an old thread, did a search like I was supposed to .

My B&M2 shifter has started to whine now that the cold weather has come in. But this is the second year that I had it. The whine seems to only be heard in reverse and 1st. Apparently, when the car is warm it goes away. Have any of you noticed this as well? I will pay more attention to it this week.

I know the rattle is going to have to be ignored but that whine is new and I'm just trying to be preventive. I'd hate to be on the highway and that sucker just detaches into my hand. I'm also not sure whether it's the shifter or the front of the transmission and the noise resonates through the shifter.

thanks

Bump, I know I'm not the only one with this problem.
