well i don't know about the 1zz and how well it would fit/what mods it needs but on the FF's its ususally MUCH easier to drop the engine from the bottom.
acess to a lift will make your job a lot easier, will have to drop the front end copmletely. pull your front suspension, and unbold your hubs from the axles.
pull the axles (after draining the transmission, my first mistake) and remove all the subframe bolts and front cross member (front motor mount)
this will leave the engine hanging by the two side motor mounts. continue to remove all heater hozes, PS lines (unless you can drop the rack with the subframe, can't remember), AC, ground wires, wiring harness, fuel lines, etc.
once those things are all done, grab a pallate or two and lower the Xmember onto them. once you remove the side mounts the car can be lifted up by the lift (or in my case, with a couple of friends under the frame with the fenders removed and rolled back on two tires, ghetto but works)
this gives you a nice platform to swap on, remove old engine, easy acess to PS lines and rack if modification is needed etc...new engine is bolted to member, when everything lines up the car is then lowered onto the engne "assembly" and see if the side mounts line up.
then it's axles, lines, etc. back together and some interior rewiring.
hope that helps a bit. i know doing swaps because of emissions sucks. i'm glad i have no worries, yet..................
good luck, lemme know if you need more help. i'll be doing my GZE swap on my POS US corolla GTS soon. 1200 for a front clip isn't bad but i have an extra engine harness and ECU too so i can probably get one cheaper if i need to.
later
