S-AFC enough? Or is standalone needed...?

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

Well, I'm not there yet, I've actually just received my RB20, but I have big plans for the next few months. I'm going to be upgrading the turbo to aT3/t04E 50trim and 550cc injectors, 300ZX MAF, and FMIC...my goal is 350-375whp.

Anyway, is a simple S-AFC and 300zx MAF enough to tune that kind of power in safely and reliably? I've installed an SDS before on my Probe when I turbo'd it, but I'm trying to save some money here if I can (SAFC's don't work on a probe).

So would that be enough to tune? Or do you really need to be able to control timing and other stuff? Thanks for any useful input.

Nick

I have very similar plans in mind but i was considering going with the Greddy E-manage and Profec E-01 to control it. I hear the emanage has more features than the safc so that's what I am doing. What Injectors fit the RB20 fuel rail?

I got this one. I tested Fitted a Denso 660cc injector I had. It fit right down into the fuel rail. I guess if you wanted to go for cheap you could try and score some Stock DSM injectors those are 450cc. The RB clips don't fit the Denso injectors tho, so DSM clips or honda clips could be used. Need resistors tho since they are low impedance injectors.

for that kinda power(350) a SAFC would be sufficient

Nice...any idea what the boost limit of the stock ecu would be? As in, how many psi can you run safely on the stock ecu and still have it control timing effectively?

88 RX7 INJECTORS ARE DIRECT REPLACEMENTS. 550 HIGH. AS FOR BOOST YOU COULD POSSIBLY TURN IT UP TO 1 BAR AND BE FINE. BUT IF YOU GO HIGHER YOU WILL HAVE TO GET INJECTORS AND A RE-TUNE/ STANDALONE.

put in some more $ and get standalone, you can get rid if the MAF, SAFC and ECU chiping hassle. in the end; you are not hacking your fuel and ignition and tune more precised.

the microtech unit are pretty good priced; FITO on here is using it and got some great result on his rb25

I happen to own a couple if second gen RX-7's. 550 is stock for the primaries on the TII. Are those the injectors you are referring too? I have a local source for them if they are, which would be sweet.

I am running 720 secondaries on my TII and wonder if those would work on the RB as well?

and yes my gas milleage on my TII would make most SUV's look like a Geo Metro. 11m/g if I am lucky :)

I don't want to hear you guys whining about only getting 20m/g on your RB's. My RB 25 is my economical car compared to my RX-7's.

YES, THE TURBO INJECTORS THAT ARE HIGH IMPEDANCE 550CC STOCKERS. THOSE 720S SHOULD ALSO WORK IF THEY ARE HIGH IMPEDANCE.I CAN GET THE RX-7 INJECTORS NEW FOR ROUGHLY $70/EA

A good place to learn about the standalones would be in one of these RX7 forums (I like http://www.teamfc3s.org). This is where I learned most of my info on the Haltech and Microtech units.

I currently have 6 S5 550cc injectors (series 5's are the only high imp TII 550's) that I will be using for my car. The only issue you might have, as I'm sure Nismo has heard countless times, is that you need to get them cleaned. I have test fit them, and they are a direct fit. However, as it was said before, you will need to take the electrical clips off of the RX7 since they are not the same.

yeah, like I said, I've installed the SDS standalone on my previous car and it worked good. I'm just wondering about limits of the stock ecu working with an safc. My buddy has an EPROM burner and the software to play around with them; he tunes his own ecu on his sr20 and said that we could probably adjust the eprom on the rb20 ecu and make it work good.

Well that blows. Now I just need to buy two more RX7's so I can have 6 injectors and 6 clips :)

Just kidding.

http://www.jblmk3.com/id116_m.htm do you think that those injectors will work with the RB20

http://www.racetronix.com sells cheap injectors, I used them, but I'm not sure if they leaked at all while the car was off, because sometimes startup was difficult, but could have been my sds tuning.
