Finally installed my helical over the weekend.I performed the change-over at home, and had a local shop (my 4x4 gearhead) double check the play. He couldnt find the spec so he called a dealership, and ten minutes later he recieved the correct info. It was a hair on the tight side, but still within spec. He ran some Persian blue and verified the gear mesh. He gave me an all clear. So I installed the pumpkin with minimal carnage to myself. I have driven on it in the city to and from work twice, maybe 35miles. At slower speeds, and when it is still cold, I can hear the whir of gear mesh. Only on take off and slower speeds though. Is this normal? For the record, my car has no carpeting, aluminum collars, Heim joints and pillow balls at all 4 corners. She is an S13, so the diff housing is a solid mount to the subframe.I am already used to the assorted humming and creaking, so the diff is a whole new noise. Should I be concerned?

the aluminum collars transmit more noise. aluminum diff bushings will make it worse. i personally love the noise. it should pose no mechanical problems for you though.

Just needed someone to ease my worries. The noise kinda spooked me, I thought after all that work, I did something wrong.I am re-considering going with the aluminum 1 piece driveshaft at this point. I can only imagine even more noise. Who knows? I may still go that route anyway.
