So I really want to do the electric fan setup on my 92 240SX w/ KA24DE. I really have a problem though, being that I live in Florida, so I decided that I will buy the Oil Cooler from a 1987 RX-7 FC3S in my local Junkyard. I have some questions about the install though, and since I would like to photograph and document it for use as a post on the install page, I need to know a few things.

First off, does anybody know where I can buy braided steel lines(not the covers) because I want to make this install look good.

Secondly, Am I merely required to locate an oil line and splice it, run one end into the intake hole of the oil cooler, then connect the other side of the line to the exit.

Third, Will I mess up anything(throw codes, poor idle, etc) by doing this.

Any input would be appreciated, especially if anyone has a suggestion(picture) of which oil line to cut. Thank You.

There arent any external oil lines on a stock ka24de. The easiest way to run an oil cooler is to get an adapter that sits under the oil filter and has both feed and return lines. Ones designed for ford v8 will work. Im not sure on which v8, but its easy to check because its the one that uses the same oil filter as ka. You wont throw any codes or anything of that nature. You might want to upgrade to a higher volume oil pump at the same time.

With ka24e you can just put a 280zx or z24i pump on, but with de you have to go aftermarket.

yes i have, i have a few ford v8 adapters and have one on my car. One thing to note: you must find an adapter that has a female thread to go onto the ka oil adapter (just like an oil filter) some adapters have a male adapter on the block side (designed to be used directly into block with factory thread adapter removed. On the ka you cannot do this because 1. the steel thread adapter is molded into aluminum adapter 2. with the ka aluminum adapter removed the threads into block are not the same as the oil filter thread. This is really confusing i apologize.

if you are talking about the oil pump, both 280zx and z24i oil pumps will work correctly with ka24e (physically identical). 280zx turbo is the best choice of these.

edit: Adapter you would need would be just like this type, except for a ford v8 (one that uses same oil filter as ka) oil cooler adapter

Nah i just meant if you had done the oil pump devious, plumbing for an oil cooler now is dead easy since i've put my remote mount filter in. And for anyone else that is interested, when i installed the Derale remote filter mount kit (for Ford V8) to my front wheel drive KA, the oil filter housing that bolts to the KA block needs to be removed so you can cut off the length of pipe before the threads that the filter screws on otherwise the adapter won't go on.

hey sss, do you remember which ford v8 oil filter thread it is that can be used with ka, for sake of reference. I have been searching the last few hours to clarify my statements, but since you have done something similar with you ka you may know?

drifts14x: Holley/EARL is your friend, they make adapters and remote oil filter adapters for Nissan.

use this to mount in place of the oil-filter. click here for this part#

the oil filter is mount to the bottom of this adapter. click here for this part#

both adapters runs about $35.

you can get some AN-10 stainless steel braided lines and connectors on ebay for cheap.

here's the shematic for a custom engine oil cooler setup:

that device you see mounted is the electric oil pressure sensor

Where did you get your remote mount oil filter kit from? I have a 91 240sx.

Thanks

Hello again,

I am about to build my own oil cooler setup. The only question that I had left was this: What size plumbing did you use? I was told to use -10 gauge........

yeah but, thats a lot of things that need cooling, and idealy you want it in front of the car, it cant be angled, due to the fact that the car sits low already, and would probably get destroyed if it hits something (not to mention losing all of your oil). So space is limited and that means there is goin to be some overlap. Hmmmm.

depending on the cooler's size and your i/c's piping maybe in the openings behind the foglights.

One of the neatest places that I have seen to put the cooler is right behind the after market grill on a Silvia conversion. It looks good and fits and quite nicely. Granted, your limited to a narrower, wider cooler.......

I have an oil cooler, sandwiched between the intercooler and the radiator on that bumper support beam..i had it there before I had it intercooled, and it does a damn good job of keeping temps down. All my air flow goes straight through the intercooler/oil cooler first. I wish I had a good pic of it...I will once i get a website up for my car.

For the people who don't have oil coolers yet, I suggest using a thermostat too when doing the install...cold oil is a bad thing, and the thermostat just causes the oil to bypass the cooler until it reaches a certain temp (I think my thermostat is around 180-190 deg)/

Is there a separate thread on just how much better the 280ZX oil pump is?

1) is there significant flow improvement? (Any numbers based on either oil pressure gauges or actual flow numbers for both pumps from the manufacturer?)

2) will this significant flow improvement be bad for my turbo (you know how using a -4an oil feed line will cause the turbo seals to leak, because of too high pressure? well I use -3an, if get this high flow pump, will this cause them to leak because of higher pressure?)

3) will this 280ZX help me get rid of my rocker arm clatter every time i crank the car (you know how there is some clatter since there is no oil pressure that goes to the rocker arms the first few seconds you crank the car? for SOHC only that is).

4)Has anyone installed the 280ZX oil pump succesfully? Any issues?

Thanks,

sil80

Ha ha! This is a bump for my own personal benefit. I finally saved enough money for an oil cooler set up with an electric gauge ect.....

I just didn't want to see this thread disappear somehow!
