Actually the 911 has only been available as a "Mid-Engine" since 1996 pre-'96 it was a rear engine car.
Quote »Tested for the first time on March 14 1996, the new 911 GT 1 features a mid-engine design rather than the rear-engine layout of a typical 911. It is powered by a 3.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, water-cooled, horizontally-opposed, six-cylinder Porsche engine restricted to 600 hp by LeMans GT 1 regulations. The engine also incorporates two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, multipoint sequential fuel injection, single plug ignition and a TAG 3.8 electronic engine management system.[/quote]
I remember watching people race them - and regularly doing a 180 when approaching a hairpin bend etc.
