my car has been sitting since november last year, and the brake rotors have a fair amount of rust on them. what's the best way to get rid of the rust so they're good when I swap them over to my new car?

Drive (serious). That or have them resurfaced. If you are talking about the rust closer to the hub that won't come off b/c the pads will never hit it, grab a brillo pad and some degreaser, rub it off, and paint it w/ high temp paint.

For the rust on the rotor hat (not where the pad is in contact) I have used a wire brush designed to chuck up in a hand drill. You wouldn't want to use that on the pad contact area but it makes quick work on the rest of the rotor. If the firepath on the rotor is pitted, you may want to have them lightly resurfaced by a shop. That will tear up new pads pretty quick if you don't.

it's only where the pads contact. the rotors were plated with something that doesn't rust.

Get them resurfaced or drive with them...they could probably use the resurfacing anyway.

:thumbup He is correct. Just inspect the rotors and make sure it is just surface rust and there are no pits.
