Guys, I noticed my rotors are pretty rusy around the edges... would this be a driving hazard? I don't feel anything wrong when I drive, and the stopping power is still pretty strong. Should I replace them? I was hoping to get a Stillen intake and coupe mids installed, but if the rotors are a problem I guess I can take care of that first.... Would the dealer clean it up?

Its fine if you don't drive the car for a little while and leave it out the disc surface will rust too. A couple stops will remove the rust. The parts of the rotor that are not in contact with the pads will rust.

What do you mean by edges exactly ? The very edge like where the pads don't reach ? Or past where you see where marks ?

Normaly rotors unless powder coated or treated in some way rust pretty quickly when not moved or where they don't get worn down. If this is the case don't worry it's very normal.

If you don't drive your car for like a few days even, your rotors will probably show signs of rust even on the worn part just from the moisture and dew at night.

Your 2004.5 probably has aftermarket cheaper rotors with a slightly less steel carbon content

Yep normal .

Well I was going to say if you want a set that doesn't do that is fairly cheap and good quality to check out the guys I got my set from but I can't seem to find them anymore

Several on ebay though, just make sure it's not the normal cast iron rotors, mine I got from Triton Rotors they are high carbon steel and powdercoated on the parts not rubbed on and there's no rust. Had them on there approaching I wanna say a year now. FWIW.

I had the same problem with mine. Their was rust on pretty much every surface that the pads don't touch. I cleaned them with a wire wheel then painted them black with a caliper paint (high temp). I wanted the paint to come right up to the contact surface so I painted about an 8th inch extra (brakes take off the extra the first time you use them). They look 10 times better and it was an easy fix. It has been about 6 months and they still look great!!!

Painted rotors may be an interesting addition, especially if your calipers are also painted or already come in an interesting color. Rust on the rotors is very common where I live-- it rains almost daily down here and if I don't drive for 2-3 days, the rotors look brown or rust colored. Almost all cars down here show rust after 1-2 days, but never is damage cuased by the rust. 1 mile and they're their shiney self again. In yoiur country (US?), in very moist areas or where there is sea air, my thinking is that the rotors would also show rust within days of not being driven.

Hope this helps. One thought, try matching the rotor color with the calipers and see what the outcome is-- might look very nice.

As with all paint jobs, surface preparation is very important. Make sure to remove ALL rust, otherwise it just comes through the paint after time.
