Rustproof driveshaft?

Hey Guys...

Do we rustproof driveshafts? All the dealers are either unsure or say no...and all the rustproof companies say YES.

I am so frustrated! I had my whole car rustproofed (the rubbery stuff), and it was fine. Then I had the front driveshaft replaced...

I've been trying to figure out whether to get the front driveshaft rustproofed.

I peeked underneath the car, I am 80% sure they did rustproof the rear driveshaft, but I may be mistaken since the rear is obviously older than the new. If they did rustproof it, they did go all the way around...

When you talk about rustproofing, do you mean undercoating? That stuff is thick. If you put that on the driveshaft wouldn't it make it out of balance, which means it would vibrate?

My Jeep leaks alot so rust isn't a problem.

I would NOT do it.

You run the chance of throwing it out of balance. 99.99999% of all driveshafts out there are not undercoated and they have never had a problem. If you are concenred about the look, spray it with a flat black spraypaint.

I see. Guess I was lucky with the rear driveshaft. I did hear from someone that because it spins so fast, the rustproofing flies off anyways, (or balances itself out and a thin layer stays behind).

Hmm...I won't do the front one, but I wonder if I should replace the rear one. There are NO symptoms, but is it bad for the existing parts of the rear drivetrain if there are any smaller vibrations resonating? (has been fine for 1 yr now)

If it's not vibrating so you can notice it's probably ok. My jeep leak was a little hint. In the South we don't have problem with rust but I understand up North where they salt roads and such it is an issue. It's messy, but you could rub some used motor oil on the driveshaft during winter.
