We just purchased a 1994 pathfinder with 132K miles for $1000. Seems to be in decent shape, runs good but we discovered some rust
on the frame rails just behind the rear axel on each side. On the drivers side the outboard side of the frame rail has a rust hole approx 4 x 6 inches. The right rear side has a hole in the outboard side of the frame rail just behind the rear wheel.

I am going to look into getting some plate steel welded on there.

I was curious if this is a common problem and , while it is obviously not a great thing, how much should I be worried about the vehicle structurally?????

Just looking for opinions from more experienced folks with this vehicle.

We bought it for my girlfriend's 32 year old son

Opinions welcome
Thanx

Welcome to NICO.

That is a very common place for rust on WD21 Pathfinders. I'd say if you can get it patched up well and check the rest of the frame's structural integrity and fix any problems, you won't have an issue.

Is this Pathfinder 4WD? Auto or manual?

If the transmission fluid hasn't been maintained, do a cooler line flush and install an in-line filter and ideally an auxiliary transmission cooler (details & steps in this thread under the "Transmission and driveline" Q&A section) - failures of the RE4R01A transmissions in WD21 Pathfinders due to heat and fluid contamination is common if the previous owner hasn't maintained the fluid properly. A B&M 70268 transmission cooler will fit in front of the A/C condenser; anything thicker than 3/4" will require modification to the bumper.

its a very common problem on that model acutally its the #1 reason you dont see much of them on the road (deemed unsafe to drive) all pathfinders die early from rust. get it patched and seald with under coat. Also external transmission coolers are also recommended. My cousin has a 95 and hasnt had on issue at all or so he says. once all that is done you should be a happy camper.
