Rust spots in doorjamb of 97 1.6 GXE Sedan

Anyone else have this problem? I've come to a snag in whether I should fix it or buy another '97 (Maybe an SE)? It's eating up both the passenger and driver side jambs and I have a few minute spots on my roof (my headliner also has a stain from one of those said spots). I want to fix the spots in question (and I know the techniques to) but I don't know the gauge of steel and voltage setting and type of wire (for a MIG welder) to use. Any advice would be appreciated.

P.S. I'm too poor (more like broke) to afford a welder. So anyone on Oahu who knows of a rental place where I can rent one (when I do have the money), please leave a reply here.
