Hey guys, well I picked up a "Rust free" 97 from a dealer up north that is turning out to be anything but. Not going to name the dealer at this time( legal issue pending) so please don't ask. What started as a simple rocker rust has turned into a lot more than I anticipated, subframe is covered( could be surface but need to get it off and see how bad it is), there is a strip of rust running under the gas tank, not to mention a hole in the body in front of the left rear tire(hole wasnt there before purchase found it after poking/grinding). This car was supposed to be my DD while my 91 Coupe went under the knife but looks like this car is more of a project than my project car... :tisk: So im going to just pull the motor fix a few bits on the 91 to get it safely back on the road, and spend most of my time fixing/rebuilding the 97.

I have most of the parts i need( grinders, dremel, MIG Welder etc) but i need some advise on blasting and media. My plan is to strip the car to the body and start building it back from there. I want to blast the interior and exterior( basically the floor pans in the car and the entire underbody of it) to make sure there is no more rust to be found. I can easily get access to an air compressor, and grab a gun but would this be better http://www.harborfreight.com/90-lb-pres ... 93889.html. Probally better but since this is more than likely going to be a one time use dont want to spend money for an hour or so time save.

Also what kind of media would be best for my application? Walnut, glass bead, ceramic? I've searched here but didnt find alot aobut this topic. Splintercell used coarse walnut but couldnt get to bare metal so im guessing thats prob out.Glass bead looks like the way to go I just want some assurance that im not wasing $$ cause i have a feeling this is going to get expensive. Any assistance is helpful when it comes to this kind of work im honestly a noob.

I wouldn't blast the car, could cause pitting, just sand the exterior. And how bad of rust, surface rust on the subframe is normal, usually corrected with a wire-brush and a rattle-can. Hell most cars 6 months old are rusty somewhere (bolt heads, suspension areas)

As far as how bad...Still in the discovery phase, most of the stuff i have found thus far is rot. Rocker pannels on the driver side rotted through the bottom and the top isnt in much better shape, a few spots on the floor pans have a cracking noise when I pushed with 1 finger  again more rot. I have found a few spots where the rubber coating has cracked and flaking off( usually a sign of rust) and sanding that crap will take days.

Ugh.

Don't get too far into it until you post pics.

Hold off on any purchases (media or blaster), a full restoration like you're talking about is a HUGE undertaking. I'm finding that DIY can cost more than taking it to a pro... I'm pretty adept at rust projects, but not much time to get into detail right this sec... Like I said, let's see pics of the worst of it first.

Ya im not making any purchases any time soon. I need to do some work on the garage first to have a place to work on it at. All of the suff I have already have been used for other projects around the house( remodeling oh what fun).

I'll try to get some pics up today when i get home.

Eh almost forgot about this post, mom had some medical complications and had to stop messing with the rust bucket. Thanks for the replies but after taking a step back ( after the shock of it) and looking at the car and the ammount of work to salvage the shell just isnt worth it. I have a line on a 96 shell so we'll see how that pans out.

Know this s*** is old but didnt want to leave it on a oh ya pics in a few lol.

So I'm guessing you didn't win the legal battle then? What dealer was it?

Called back the agent after i found out all of the rot on the car, and wanted at least My money back -shipping. Figured i would eat that and be done with it. Told him everything I found and that the car was not as stated, a LOT of rust, and the car was in an accident even after i was told repetedly the ,"Car is clean man very very clean, Its the Owners sons car so he brings it in for service."

Got a call back a few min later stating If i wanted any of my money refunded i would need to get a lawyer and sue. f*** d-bags.

Hmmmm.

Wish you hadn't waited so long, and wish you'd had a good inspection beforehand, but we could still make 'em famous. :)

Ya me too, well about the inspection before hand, but i thought that going with a actual "Dealer" instead of Joe Smoe to avoida problem like this.

I've got some plans in the works for revenge

No camera anymore, and my old laptop with the pics was stolen...( its been an awesome year :frown: ). I will start a thread when i find a good shell documenting the process of swaping the parts off the 97.
