A few weeks ago I had my timing belt changed at a Nissan dealer. I did replace tensioner, pully's etc. I had to return the car because ruff and loss power condition. Dealer said he had to reajust my Ignition.??? Now it seems smoother But, Im hearing a small knock noise in motor. Dealer is telling me my AIVU valve causes this. It is commen problem with 300zx as well.

Anybody know what he is talking about.

AIVU valve ? What is going on with the J30's lately..no more competent VG30DE mechanics out there ? I don't think there is such a thing on the car..maybe they meant Idle/AAC valve..

You don't have to readjust anything when doing a timing belt on this engine. Remove radiator..waterpump..timing belt cover. Lock on tensioner stop bolt. Align to TDC/crank/pulley marks...Remove tensioner..remove belt.. replace tensioner..replace belt...adjust tensioner..close engine and drive. I was just reading this on my own J30 service manual less than 10mins ago.. (playing from memory..double check your own manual/sources)

Sounds like they did something with the timing.. You could have a misaligned teeth on the belt itself, and it can result in this. The tensioner adjustment process is very precise on this engine..using feeler guages..belt tension guages etc.. Noise in motor could be belt slap..misfire..etc.

Checklist of parts for J30 replacement:

A - 3 Drive Belts (A/C Compressor, Belt Fan & Alternator Belt, Power Steering Pump Belt) B - Timing BeltC - Water Hoses (Quantity 2) D - Crankshaft Sprocket Plate E - Water Pump & Water Pump Gasket F - Camshaft O-Ring Seals (Quantity 2) G - Camshaft Oil Seals (Quantity 4) H - Tensioner Springs (Quantity 2) I - Timing Belt Tensioner J - Thermostat

Take this and go back to them and ask them if they did all this. BTW, the 95J30T has a kevlar belt that is good until 105K. Hopefully you took advantage of it.

I think they meant AIV valve... I don't even think the J30 has one.. Someone else might chime in..

I thought only turbocharged Nissan's had the AIV valve, not the J unless some previous owner made mods and used a 300ZX AIV valve and turbo?

Hey Guy's Thanks for your help because I do not know much about the Js

Dealer calls me back today and tells me that AIV valve is not in J30.He ask me to bring the car back on Monday. Hopefully they will be able to solve my problem. The car only has 160km and something is not right.

* Loss power* Knocking noise* Runs ruff

Is there anything else I should mention to the dealer?

Ask him what your time is worth. Don't be rude or obnoxious about it.. Just be pleasant and polite. You could get some kind of compensation..could be small.. a free oil change..tire rotation or balance etc. etc. You paid for a job that had a mistake and gave them a chance to correct it..on your time. assuming it is indeed a mistake and can be corrected. Make sure you get that point across. Granted nobody is perfect, but, there is such a thing as customer satisaction. Not to mention, a test drive after the job is done by the mechanic who did it.especially workmanship and pride. Believe me, the service writer will recall you for a long time
