Last monday I went out and bought me a $600 1990 240sx. Sadly enough, its auto, but I figured this wasn't an issue considering the sr swap I'm getting comes with a manual transmission anyways.

When I purchased the car I knew it had a few spots of rust, but mostly around the wheels wells like on a lot of 240s I'd seen. Then when I started sanding them down/cutting them out to prep for fibreglassing/bondo-ing the damage I noticed a few more serious spots of rust damage.

Now I'm pretty new to the bodywork thing so please dont flame. But is this the dreaded frame-rot I've heard about?

Is the damage repairable by just cutting out the damaged area and fibreglassing the outter panels again or do I have to get someone to weld new sheetmetal in?

Bump cuz it looks pretty serious, i dnno, a frame expert has to look @ it, take to a body shop and get it appraised to see how bad it is.... from my personal experience it seems the car has lost some integrity in the chassis from those holes, but eh dont take my word for it

Some of those spots are rusted out bad man. I guess you could strip the rest of the rust off and reinforce those spots.

The bottom side of the car looks alright its just those holes near the rear..

Thanks a lot, I'll probably get the local bodyshop to give me an idea of what has to be done. So in case it needs to happen, after I take out the rusted chunks/have them reinforced. Which is easier, replacing/welding rear fenders or fiberglassing/bondoing over the holes?

Do a search for Sockingtons thread, that will inspire you to build a ****ing rocket ship in your back yard. I look at it about once a month to keep hope alive.

I don't know why you bought a car that rusted out in the first place. Anyway, it looks like the bottom of the quarters are rusted through. You're going to have to find replacements from somewhere. I don't think you can buy those online from anywhere. You're likely going to have to cut them from a scrapped car.

Your 'frame' looks alright in the pictures, but those quarter panels are shot to hell. That's way too much metal gone to be patched in that area.

getting an appraisal from the local bodyshop tomorrow, if its save-able, how much and all that stuff. Pending on the results from that, this may become my parts car.

Anyone know of a rust-free 240 shell in southern alberta?
