How do these cars seem for rust in the northern climates where they are exposed to road salt?I was wondering if I should get mine sprayed, but it makes such a mess. On the other hand, there's no rust on it now and I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible. I've seen a few older I30s on the road and they don't seem to be rusting. I did check out a '99 Q45 when I was looking for a car and it did have a couple of minor rust spots.

Your car is at the end of Infiniti's 7-year/unlimited mileage Corrosion Warranty. Just wax/polish your car (Zaino Car Polish and the likes) every six months at the minimum. Have an undercarriage car wash in early spring each year to remove salt/sand/mud from the belly of the car. Your car should be corrosion free for a long time. Applying clay bar every 2-3 years will also help.

Thanks for the advise. I plan on polishing & waxing in spring, summer and fall. Tough to do in the winter up here in Ontario. I'll get a few spray cans of Rust Check or Krown and do all the inner wheel wells, etc. this fall. What is Clay Bar?

Clay Bar is used to remove contaminants on your paint. These contaminants (grease, old wax. rail dust, brake dust, etc) give a 'gritty' texture on your paint. Eventually this will lead to rust spots, etc.

I used to apply Zaino Z-18 clay bar but it's only available on line. Remember, if you dropped the clay bar to the ground, it useless. Never use a dirty clay bar as it will cause scratches on your car. Clay Bar kits are also available from Mothers and Meguiar's. All of them worked for me.

You have to wash your car with Dawn (degreaser) and rinse thoroughly. Then apply clay bar and 'lubricant' that goes with the kit. Wash the car again. this time with a regular car wash (no more Dawn). Rinse the car thoroughly and wipe dry. Apply your favorite car wax/polish and you can feel a much smoother paint texture after polishing it. I used Zaino products (except their leather conditioner) for external detailing every 6 months and spray detailer in between. For leather seats, I used Leatherique cleaner and conditioner though Lexol is also very good.

Here is a YouTube posting about clay bar application:
