so I noticed, most pathys and qx4's here in ontario have rust forming on the rear hatch, just below the glass on the left, and some on the right too. This rust corrodes the water and creeps down the entire hatch and leaves a "sexy" line of rust. I noticed mostly on the white trucks. But mine is black, and I do have a nice blob of rust just under the glass, and now i can visibly see it getting bigger and starting to seep down the back. I keep wiping off the "blue" that rust starts to show on black, but its starting to not go away. my question is, what can i do. Is it a good idea to...in the spring...use sandpaper and scrape off that rust, and just spray it over with some black spraypaint and clearcoat.....making sure i mask off the surrounding area(ok not the best looking thing, but better than RUST.) will this prevent the rust if i apply thoroughly? and is there anything i can do to get at that blue stain before it starts to further get into my paint?

Im impressed, I have only rust there and a SMALL blob of paint blistering on the front fenter in a corner. My doors and underbody are dong great, despite all the scratches on my black finish from the previous owner. i Touch them up as much as i can.

I plan on getting electronic rustproofing kit in the spring. i wish it were installed initially, but i think i can still prevent major rusting in time. Your thoughts? anybody in GTA have good places to go for oil spray, or to install professional rustproof methods? prices? lets talk, its an imporant subject people! Damn road salt!

Those electronic rust protection systems are a joke. Don't waste your money.I've been trying different rustproofing systems for 30 years, and for my money, oil spraying is the way to go. I do all my vehicles, and it works.I drove an '88 Voyager minivan for 12 years, put almost 400,000 Kms on it, and oil sprayed it regularly. It never rusted. I went 10 years before I had to do any suspension or front end work on it, and it still had the original exhaust system on it when I sold it, believe it or not. The other major benefit of oil spraying is that it makes it a lot easier to work on when you have to remove nuts and bolts. They aren't rusted in place. Hope this helps.

I've used a few different places over the years, and the going rate is usually between $80-$100 a shot. I do my vehicles in the first and second years, and then every other year after that. I also ask after about the third time not to spray under the hood. It usually doesn't deteriorate under there, and if you continually spray it there, it gets real messy, which can be unpleasant when working on the car.One last thing: I can't emphasize enough the mechanical side benefits you get when oil spraying. After 5 years of driving in our winters, with the salt and stuff, you know how bad the underside of the vehicle can be without protection. With the oil spray, the suspension doesn't rust, the emergency brake cables don't seize, the brakes last longer, the gas tank doesn't rust, etc., etc. Even the electrics are less prone to problems from corrosion. I think you get the drift.

I'm not sure of the exact part were you say rust is forming. I'm having some issues too and hey...if you show me your rust i'll show you mine!

I drive in Ontario. 01 QX4. No rust, ever.

Here's my trick:

Underbody is the black rubbery stuff. All the doors / trunk, etc are all oil filled.

Works well for me so far =) Done in Waterloo, ON. If you tell them Vincent sent you, you'll probably get $100 off or something. cost me whole of $199, (promotion from $399 - lots of business with them!) A1 Car Cleaning on University Ave.

I swear by them.

I wouldn't mind driving mine up there to have this done. . man. . that's not a bad deal. I don't believe you can get any oiling done down here. . just maybe underbody coating.

Might be worth the 7 hour trip up there

Just have to remember that next time I go to Ontario, don't tell the d!ck U.S. Border agent that I was "just screwin' around". I thought he was going to sodomize me.

Well i sorta have a reason for my rust...the previous owner rolled it and my lovely father fixed the roof instead of replacing it. His reasoning was because it was going to me (the guy didn't want it anymore) and he didn't expect me to keep it for so long! So now to get rid of the problem (3 roof paint jobs later) i have to replace the entire roof.

You guy probably already know this, but there is a real good product called Rust Converter and many variations of this.

It reacts with the rust, and neutralizes it totally. It turns it into a primered dark black, no matter how rusty, and is not a gymmick.

It is not Rustoleum, or that Jelly stuff, and is a product made of Barium, I believe.

They make a spray and a paint on. The paint works well but is hard to use, and doesn't get good coverage. I like the spray. It will not hurt the rubber but probably would mess up paint-I do not know.

Rust will keep coming back unless it gets all ground out, or converted. So I scrape and then apply.

Wear gloves and mask and hold your breath. Nasty when doing undersides. I had a real bad underbody rust problem, bolts and hardware, and it is all taken care of. The rest I used oil where I didn't want it on paint.

After Converted, you can use filler, and feather it with different grades of paper to look pretty good. Then scratch filler for the last bit and super fine sandpaper. Then prime.

This Russian kid sold me a bottle of pomegranate juice the other day. He says that you can't buy it for that price around here. Anyway, it's an antioxidant. So either I pour it on my vehicular, or on my ***. I'm 30 and I'm starting to corrode so I don't know where to use it at.

HERE is the pic of my rust! OUCH! thankfully the only patch on the whole car, besides a small paint bubble on front fender. So pour pomengranate juice on it for now? clean the salt off it often? Notice how dirty the truck is when i cleaned it a mere 8 days ago. Frikin road salt, cant wait for winter to be over...wait...not...i love driving in this snow!!! My truck is a glossy clean waxed Black Obsidian in the summer, check out my car domain page for proof. lol Notice my look of desperation in the reflection of the car

I took this with my cell this morning before work. Let me know my options, what i could do to get rid of this, and prevent more. I plan to sand it down, and cover the area with newspaper and just frikin flat black spray paint it, then some clear coat. sure itll look like crap up close but better than THIS! LOL now 99qx4....show me your rust

LOL which G are you talkin about? Mine is the 6MT Pearl White coupe pictured with me in my sig. His is the silver G35x that i had for the day today, and i probably take better care of his car than he does! That is probably in part because his is going back under the lemon law and he's getting a new one...but still! But lets get this straight,my G is under the car cover, not his

And I rarely let him touch my car, cuz i dunno if he can handle it! And it's never without me

anytime

But are you all ready for this?! I've been trying to post this all day but lost my internet connection so i had to wait till i got home just now. Soooo here is my rust:

The major spot on roof close to the windshield (due to the rollover from the previous owner over 8 years ago) The roof as i have previously mentioned has been re-painted three times but the rust seems to like me and keeps comin back LOL And if you look towards the upper right corner you can even spot rust on the roof rack!

Some shots of some more paint issues around the sunroof

In the middle between the roof racks

And this under the rear window on the driver side (which was replaced after the previous guy rolled it) And some random black thing that appeared on my hood. I can't seem to get rid of it. I dunno what it is or where it came from!

I wouldn't bet on it if I were you. If you wash your car every two days, then it will be constantly wet. Maybe not on the outside, but certainly on a lot of the inside bits, like the bottom of the doors, or inside the fenders. Some areas can take days to dry properly because they don't get any air. There is such a thing as washing it too much. Be careful.

Mines starting to form that too but it doesnt really show since my truck is black and the step is dark grey. It must have been from a rock chip and the small layer of paint is chipping off. I wouldnt repaint it unless you put alot of clearcoat. your constant washing isnt helping the matter down there either! lol

as for me...i found this sweet spray called AD200 its a rust and corrosion inhibitor, its a semi-gooey blue liquid and safe on rubber, plastic, paint, etc. I used it wherever i saw bubbling, including my window trim and front fender. But i used it on my rear hatch and it worked good! it removed the blue streak permanently and worked itself into the rust so it should prevent it from getting worse hopefully until i get to sand it down and respray.
