Hi,

I own a 03 QX4 and the road salt from previous winters has rusted my rear drums and calipers badly.

What would be the best way to prevent it from rusting even more and making it look better? Would painting over the calipers and drums help or would it eat through that also?

Thanks

Well just washing your car every week could prevent salt build up. But I would take them out and sand them down real good and paint them what ever color you want. Or you can leave them because unless you have a show truck you have nothing to worry about.

What grit sandpaper do you recommend? I've never done this kind of thing before

I used a primer and than a high temperature paint its easy but somewhat time consuming depending on the rust but well worth it. If you really need your car do a side at a time.

100 and 600 grit??? cmon man these are calipers.... not body work

Start off with a STIFF wire brush, it will remove most residual rust , then hit it with some 60-80 grit for a minute or 2 per side, then tape off the area and paint with some high temp durable paint.

Absolutely no need to sand with anything over 100 grit, especially 600 lol

Check pad life while your at it

no need for 600 grit? you're right, but i say there's no need for anything.

i live in bone-dry salt-free south texas and i have rust on my drums and calipers. doesn't bother the car, doesn't bother me.

if you insist on doing this, use a wire brush in your drill and go at it.
