So today I was removing my rear plate to add a cushion behind it to stop the rattle from my subwoofer when I noticed friggen rust along the part when the plate light area meets the body (photos below) - I couldnt friggen believe it. I take amazing care of this vehicle only he see this.. I called the dealer and have an appointment for Tuesday. I really hope this is covered under warranty cause in my opinion it's a faulty paint job.. What do you think?

Be sure to check your vehicles for the same thing!!!

Holy crap, looks like a '80's Toyota.

Yes, that should be covered. I would make sure you have the whole car checked out by a paint person for other rust areas instead of relying on Nissan alone.

Be careful with the lease as they may bing you on it saying you didn't properly care for it. Make sure Nissan takes care of both.

Nissan have always had corrosion problems. Doesn't surprise me.

Should be covered under warranty, don't let them try to screw you. Doesn't matter where you drive, there shouldn't a single spec of rust on a 1 year old car.

I've been noticing rust spots on my 2011 coupe already. I had is since September of last year and the dealer put my spoiler on a fee months after. Since then I have seen an increasing number of rust spots under the lip of the spoiler on the trunk and on the edges of the spoiler as well. If I take it into the dealer would they repaint it or something?

Ok so this is what the dealership told me...

I showed up at my dealer (drivers village NY) and seen the dude I always deal with and I said I got big problems.. I said I have rust on my trunk and he knew where it was before I finished.. He told me this is a known problem with Altima, Senta and a few Rogues. What happens is the plastic chrome looking piece on the trunk is screwed in too tight causing the paint to buckle up causing the rust....

So they ordered all new emblems for my trunk and will repair/repaint it to match all under warranty and even give me a loaner since the process will take 2-3 days..

I hope this helps any one else out there with this same problem.

I got the same problem.

Frank what do u mean the dealership ordered a new emblem? U mean they ordered and replaced the chrome part?

Bought 1yr ago. Same area rust occurring. Brought to my dealership. It took them 40mins to fix.......... I don't even think they did the painting properly. I noticed this chrome plastic part has a pretty big slit near the top, almost enough to fit a penny in. So it means water can get in and get trapped inside.

Imalready called my dealership to book another appointment to get it properly fixed. Also going to call Nissan HQ to start an official complaint, I suggest you all do the same, this is unacceptable.

They stripped my trunk, repainted it, put new altima, and long chrome looking piece on.. all under warranty. took 3 days.. you can see a clear piece of material that is inbetween the body and the chrome plastic piece so it doesnt happen again

They did a great job on my vehicle.. i would contact your dealer about this... My job was completely covered under nissan warranty do to a defect that nissan is aware of

Please pay attention to underneath as well! Here's what happens in a few years, especially if you drive in snow. A nice rep with Nissan Regional Consumer Affairs will tell you unfortunately the warranty doesn't cover rust after 5 years. I must presume to have been negligent in the maintenance of my car or Nissan would at least consider helping with the cost to repair? The only problem I have with that assumption is that everything on my car is still like new except premature rusting through the floorboards on both the driver's side and passenger side of my 2005 Altima 3.5 SE with 67,000 mi! I explained I've diligently maintained this vehicle with the hopes of it lasting for years based on the reputation of imported cars. It's been garaged during most inclement weather since I have an old beater pickup to drive in the snow or rain. I explained how shocked I was when I saw all the complaints, forums, and blogs regarding this issue. There seems to be a problem either with the material (Durasteel) or the manufacturing process of all the Gen 3 and 4 Altimas that allows water to infiltrate between the metal on the floorboards causing premature rust through. There are plastic plugs that apparently become dislodged or are not installed correctly. Nissan will not accept any responsibility or help with the repairs. Nissan has been required to extend the warranty on the rear subframe so they already know there is a huge issue with the metals they're using. I'm going to continue to watch as I anticipate a class-action lawsuit soon. Regardless, I will never own another Nissan. Please contact Nissan's Consumer Affairs if you also have this issue @ 800-647-7261. Thanks

Canada here, I'm in Toronto.

I have the same problem, please look at the way Nissan is treating me. I am planning to goto the BBB next. Totally poor customer service.

- I noticed the rust, called Nissan customer hotline. Told me to contact my dealer and they would fix it.
- Called dealer, told me the bring my 2010 Altima in, adv before fixing they would have to have the manager look and approve it. I said fine.
- Brought in my car early morning before work. Waited like 30mins. I asked them "What's taking so long? Is the manager still looking at it?" Service rep said "Oh, no, we're fixing it right now don't worry." I told them I don't have time for this, I was under the impression it was only going to take 15mins max since I was told the manager was going to look at it. Rep said "Ok no problem I'll let them know you're in the hurry." 10mins later they brought the car our "Its fixed!" I didn't have time to argue with them as I was late for work.
- Essentially what they did was just sand away the rust, and put on 1 layer of paint to touch up... I think they were hoping I wouldn't notice.
- I called the dealer again, spoke with the manager told him what had happen. He apologized, and adv for me to go in again so he can look at it. I did, the next day.
- He told me no problem, he would have it fixed and have a rental for me free of charge. He also said he would let HQ know so they can get a memo out. He told me to call in a week to book the appointment.
- I called 1 wk after, he said to me "Sorry, the parts havn't arrived yet, we are still waiting for them to arrive. Call me 1 wk later."
- Called 1 wk later "Our dealership didn't get the parts get, I'll look around for you to another dealership to see if I can get the part for you. Call me about a week later."
- Called 1wk later. He was away from the office. I left him a voicemail to call me back. He never did.
- Called 2 wks later. I spoke with him, I asked I wanted to follow-up from what he promised me. He told me this : "Sorry, we don't have the parts yet." I asked "Do you have any ETA when you guys would get the part to fix this problem??" He said "I'm not sure, I don't know." I asked again "So you are telling me, there's no ETA when the part will come in?" He said "Yes. I'll look into it and I'll give you an answer tomorrow"
- So this was last week. No voicemail and no calls from him.

My question is, have I been nice and patient enough to this dealership, and to Nissan for selling me a rusting NEW car...?

hell yes, that is absolutely ridiculous. I can't believe any business would be so negligent about ordering parts that they'd pay for a rental for an entire month rather than getting parts in and fixing it!

Just wanted to chime in here, I know it's an old thread but this sub forum doesn't seem to move fast.

I got a 2011 Altima 2.5 S Sedan and I'm having rust issues in the same spot on the trunk light bar.

Took it to the dealer for an oil change a couple weeks ago and had the service tech look at it while checking it in. She looked and then shrugged her shoulders at me and said that's not covered under warranty and it's probably because we live in Wisconsin.....She even had the "balls" to tell me to keep an eye on it from the inside of the trunk to see if the rust starts going through...HUH???? Insane...

I just had them finish the oil change and then called back later to complain to the service manager. He said to call him back any time I want to bring it back in and they would look at it again.

I plan on printing out this string of posts and see what he says.

This was the Boucher Nissan Dealership in Waukesha WI incase anyone wants to know.
