Is it ok to use a high grit sand paper to remove the rust from the cylinder walls? The rust is very light and about an inch down from the deck, and the pistons move freely. I don't want to take everything apart just to hone it.Thanks, Koupe.

or bring the pistons up to the level of the rust then dump some brake fluid in there and let is sit for an hour.. wipe it off. I don't think its a good idea to scratch at your cyl walls....

no, use the green scotch pad, thats what i use on all my bearing surfaces. it takes care of light rust no problem.

Because you're probably gonna want to hone your cyls anyways. which is just a lot of organized scratches.....

green scotch pad.

Thank for all the help. A combination of the brake fluid and scotch pad worked well.

although the above will work, if you are going to fix it, do it right. Hone it or have it bored out if it requires it.

no it wouldnt eat the rings and for the green pad being that it is light and on a smooth surface it would come off easy and i wouldnt want to be putting brake fluid in or around where it could get into my engine!!

vegascorbin is rite!..do it all the way man...if ya have the head off now anyways..you can just pop off the rod caps and pull the pistons out without removing the crank..then hone her proper and replace rings..you will save money in the end and engine life...good luck
