I just got my exhaust cam in the mail and noticed there is rust on the cam lobes..im assuming rust on these parts are bad right? haha its surface rust and will come off, but some parts are more stubborn than others.

anyone know a way i can get this off without damaging the cam, or is the cam junk? thanks..

Just clean it with a wire wheel and a drill and you should be just fine.

The cams are fine. Get what you can off with what the above posters stated. Just don't use sandpaper. I would worry more about the bearing surfaces being clean. The rust on the lobes will be cleaned off when you run the engine. It wont ruin anything if there is a little surface rust on the lobes. No worries.

I use metal polish by hand. That will only work on cosmetic rust. If the scale is dug in there you might be SOL.

Pshhh, I just throw mine on the ground a few times, knocks that rust right off Lol jk. I've heard of several ways to remove rust from cams, there is a special type of polish if I remember right that is actually made by 3m or Dupont I can't remember, but you just take a rag dip it in rub the cam for awhile and it should be stupid clean, like it gets rid of anything on the camshaft down to the oil molecules left on it.

Good to here you got it worked out. I know you already have yours in, but just as a reference to everyone that may need a solution to rusty cams, bearings, and other surfaces that cant really have rust removed aggressively, there is a product that works really well. I don't remember the exact name of the product but Eastwood automotive sells it. Its a gel that you coat whatever needs rust taken off, and it "eats" rust, but it does no damage to metal. So unlike acid baths that will damage metal if you leave it on too long, this stuff will not damage the metal regardless of how long you keep the gel on there. I had a crank journal that got water on it and had a coating of surface rust, and it worked great. Just trying to help some people out with similar problems.

Haha, close but I don't think so. Here is the link to the stuff. Kinda pricey but its useful. I'm used to working on engines that have been sitting in a scrap yard for 30 years (Hot rodding was my passion before Nissans). So I would have loved to of known about this stuff along time ago.http://www.eastwood.com/rust-s....html

I'd use it but I think rust is what holds my car together.
