I pulled back seat and interior panels out to install coilovers, and I really want to do something this time. Picture shows good area. Under the top well cover which is behind back seat is even worse. Should I remove rust using sand paper and metal brush and spray paint? I dropped by Walmart today and saw spray paint that says 'STOPS RUST' or 'CAN SPRAY ON RUST.' I know cut and weld is the right fix, but I don't want to go there and don't think it's that serious.

I'd sand, clean, primer and spay well. Being on the interior it should be too bad.Make sure to sand ALL the rust off to the shiny metal. I'd clean it with alcohol then. Be sure it is very dry and clean before you spray it or the rust will come back very quickly and bubble the paint right off. Just my opion from past experience. Good luck!

skip sandin you'll just frustrate yourself with all those edges and angles going though 100 discs. just a wire wheel on an angle grinder and a vaccuum to clean up, use prep all, then use the rust remover, most of the time that has to be wired brushed again, prep'd again, then hit it with rust convertor, then spray it with some rustoleum rust prohibitng paint. thats as good as youre gonna get without cutting and welding.

Thanks for your tip. I'm not going to mess with it now. I think the best time would be when I replace the top. Remove top and clean up that area and install.

That's cool. Yes, please. I guess it's a common problem then.

You guys might want to try some POR15 (www.por15.com). You don't have to take the rust down, as the rust actually helps the POR adhere even better...! Just remove any flakes or scale, leave the remaining rust, and then use the POR... it's extraordinarily resilient stuff, too.
