Rust! Manufactures defect.

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi guys! Pls. check the area around the two front hood hinges (passenger and driver side) where the lower edge of the windshield meet.

Last year , I noticed a surface rust that runs like a line where two metal meets joint by weld. I scrapped it until I saw a metal and cleaned it well. I sprayed a rust primer paint and did forget it before the winter comes.

Now, the rust started to eat up from beneath. It seems like it is not too late to fix it by scraping it.
I went to the body shop and they said they need to remove the windshield, front quartel panel and see where water is seeping. No signs of interior leaks or anything. I also went to the dealership and ask them to see if this is covered by warranty. (i doubt it)

I went to another bodyshop for second opinion and told me the same thing. If not covered by warranty, this fix will be around $2000-3000. My car is currently worth 10k-11k only and I dont think it us worth paying for this. I am keeping it for another 2 yrs... I might just do it my self and see how bad the rust is...

Here is the picture. This is the passenger side that has issue. The driver side is immaculate. No issue at all.

I removed all loose rust and left a hard metal surface.

Terrible metal material Infiniti used on this one...
Good thing the rust started outside and seep through the side (below edge of windshield ) and cracked...

Anti rust primer from Walmart sucks! Pls. never use these type of rust inhibitor paint from Walmart etc..
It did not protect the body from moisture accumulation. (Black primer from first post , rust accumulating underneath the paint)

Underwood rust encapsulator does not also protect much from undercarriage rust bec. It never hardened like the POR15 rust protection primer. POR15 when cured is as hard as a steel/metal. This thing like when exposed to moisture it becomes hard and provide rust protection (antioxidation)

If you would like to use it under your car, use a POR15 primer spray. Make sure you wear a paint spray respirator ($30) and work in an open area. Spray can is quicker but you can also use a paint can if you have time and brush underneath. I recommend POR15 metal prep after brushing off loose rust. (Rinse and dry)
Then apply POR15 rust inhibitor primer.

Amazing stuff!

Thanks!
I took my time.

Removing the rust took me about 1-2 hours.

Por15 Metal Prep needs 30minutes to etch.
Rinse with water and dry. I really dried it well even using a heat gun. Not too close to the metal. Enough to make the ambient temp to warm up.

POR15 Filler need to be cured for 1 hour.
Then Applied POR15 putty. I think the putty should be dry to the touch in an hour and 3-4 days to totally cure. I waited 4 days for this to dry. After that I sanded it. Sanding is very easy since the putty is design to be sand able.

After sanding, I use the Por15 metal prep again and rinse and dry.

Then first coat of top coat. I waited a few hours for the 2nd coating. I think it took me a week to do the entire process. But mostly curing and drying took time... I want it done the right way the first time...

BTW, I use a watercolor brush for the top coat. I did not use much paint for the topcoat.
