Hello again. I have noticed a couple Chitown J30's with badly rusted rockers in front of the rear tires (as in gone). Even though mine seems to have been babied, when I looked closer, I noticed the drivers side rough and the passenger side not as bad but starting. I haven't poked at it much as I won't have time to mess with it until summer.

Question: is it rusting from the inside out or outside in? I had an Aerostar and Chevy pickup that were inside out. Is there some sort of bad drain or poor design that lets it rust. I alway got rid of the vehicles before the rust started (I noticed it in other vehicles).

I wondered that if it is from the inside, can I drill a hole or 2 from the bottom and get some rust converter in or ??? My son will be using the car and probably not taking care of it like I would. (He will be taking it to college next year) So I have control for the next 5 months. Hopefully he will be nice to it until he's done with college. (He had my old Lincoln for 3 years and handed it down to his little bro. so he's good on the car just doesn't wash it much) Thanks.

That is a very common area for rust in these cars as well as the weld behind the front wheels. I paid a reputable body shop $300 some years ago to get it fixed professionally and then got it Krown rust controlled(http://www.krown.com) . I haven't seen rust on the car since then.

I guess my question is if it is rusting from the inside out or outside in. I felt that if I had caught my Aerostar early enough and drilled some holes and tried to seal it from the inside, I could have saved it. Is there some way salt and moisture is getting up in there that can be slowed. If the car prove to be as reliable as it is for most of you, it would be worth investing in the repair. I just need to get my son to wash it more often!

I had a bit of both. Road salt and water penetrated through the weld seam and began the oxidation process from inside out as the weather got warmer. Chips from road debris exposed paint and started surface rust on the surface.
