While me and my father were took of the shield underneath the car for the oil change we noticed some rust. I wanted to know how bad it is, and if there is anything I could put on it to coat it, from rusting any further.

Below are pictures of what we saw:

Gotta love the salt belt.

Try Naval Jelly to get it off, but keep it off the rubber.

A long time ago, a body guy told me when he drove the beaches, he would always spray the underside of his vehicle with used motor oil. Upon leaving the beach, he would always spray wash the underside thoroughly.

You could move south and stay away from the saltwater and beaches.

Check out that oil soaked alternator ! you seriously need to have your valve cover gaskets repleaced. My gaskets where leaking but nowhere near the leak you are having.

I have a jeep that I've had to fight rust on. Use rusteoleum paint on it. I ended up with semi-gloss black, but you could use whatever color and sheen you'd like. Works very well. I'd degrease it good first though!

I don't think the rust is horrible, but I'd look into some belts as well as the valve covers first -look for cracks in the grooved sides of the belts where it's bent back, if there are more than three per linear inch you should put new ones because it reeaaaly sucks when they break.....

Soak the adjusters with PB Blaster for a few days first.

Have the guides been done?

Por-15 works well. What do your bottom rear door sills look like?

Thanks for all your replies:In the first picture, what are lose rusted lines, and if I put mineral oil to keep them from rusting further, would there be a problem?

Sound advice.

Be careful not to apply too much pressure if you take a wire wheel to it.

(A stiff wire wheel, high RPM's & excessive pressure can result in gouging the metal TOO deeply.)

An abrasive buff is the way to go if you're using air tools.(Takes away the rust without gouging the metal excessively)

I'd also be meticulous around this bracket as well.(See picture)

(Note to self... stay in the South)

I highly recommend Loctite Extend. It has been available in both brush-on and spray can form in the past, but from the web site it appears that they've limited it to brush on... either way it's good stuff. Bought my last can at Lowe's.
