Well, things took a turn for the worse today. It appears that at least 150 children were killed when the situation took a nose dive earlier today.

Here is a link to the BBC article http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3624024.stm

It's a shame that people are turning to killing children for political reasons.

Not to be cynical about the situation, but the Chechens may be far friendlier in a hostage situation than the Russians. This isnt the first time the Russians have botched a hostage rescue. bud

yeah, the russian government is pretty brutal...

apparently it started when some Spec Ops guys went to recover some bodies that the takers left...then all hell kinda broke loose...

Remember that theater situation a while back?

it'd be nice if all the rescues could go down like that Peru Embassy back in the '90's...

Yeah, I agree completely. The Russians pretty much killed the hostages themselves in the hostage standoff in the Moscow theater a couple years ago. The Russian government isn't the most effective or smart group of politicians in the world. In this case however, the first accounts seem to indicate that the terrorists waited until rescue people were coming in to remove the previously executed bodies and then blew the roof on the gymnasium where a few hundred children and the dead bodies were located. Sounds to me like they were trying to kill as many innocent people as possible. But, I doubt that the Russian military/police handled the situation very well once the gym blew up. Sounds like they went in with guns blazing.

Still a very tragic situation.

The account that I read (Reuters) said that some kids made a break for it and the hostage takers opened fire on the kids. From there it degenerated into chaos.

Well,The Russian Federation has been fighting with Chechnya to keep this province in the federation. They have also had problems with Dagestan as well. But Dagestan has not mobilized a fighting force like the Chechens have and do not receive funding from rich Islamofacists in the Middle East.

Let us remember, that even though these Chechen rebels are no saints (and have ties with Al Qaeda) the Russians surrounded Grozny, laid seigh to the city and leveled it. This fight, tit for tat has been going on since the 1990's. The Russians have done some horrible **** to the region.bud
