I have an 89 240sx and recently it started running real bad after driving a couple of miles. It starts fine in the morning and I can drive a couple miles with no issues. Then it starts to run bad, boogs down during acceleration and most of the time it just quites running. It smells like it is real hot but the temp gauge is still toward the C and the radiator is not real hot. There is an apparent oil burning smell and if I open the oil fill cap smoke comes out of the valve cover. The car will not start unless it is left to sit for several hours then it will start right up with no issue till I drive it a couple miles again. The smell of burnt oil is real bad in the garage after I get it back home. I have recently changed the oil and it still looks the same as when I changed it. Please does anyone have any direction I could go...

did you check your coolant level if there is no water/coolant in contact with the temp sensor it will read cold all the time, even while the engine is melting down. you need to bleed the cooling system properly too when changing coolant or doing any cooling system repairs. so if you have done any of this just prior to your problem, thats a good place to start. if the system is full and ok. you may have a problem with plugged exhuast. cat come appart or something along those lines

Thanks for the reply, I have not done anything to the cooling system. I have checked the coolent level and it appears to be fine but I will check again just in case.

If you try and start the car with the pedal on the floor, what happens. Are you getting black smoke out of your exhaust. It sounds almost like a bad coolant temp sensor(it is the two wire sensor)
