Hey, I've got a 91 KA24E with 125k miles. After I recently changed the oil, the lifters starting ticking. I was thinking that it could be that one of the oil passages got clogged, so I tried re-changing the oil. No change. So I tried adding STP oil treatment to thicken the oil, to maybe quiet it down. (From 10W-30). It helped a little, but not nearly enough. I decided to try Auto-RX. I have been running it for about 20 miles, but also no change.

Can/Should I keep running the truck for the entire 3000 or so miles for the Auto-RX treatment, or will I burn up my valves? The ticking is only at low RPMs. Is there a way to tell if it is a defective lifter, or if it is just a clogged passageway?

Thanks!

I was told that the lifters are controlled by springs and no oil cleaners can do the job. You need a trained professional to adjust them. Cleaning out the oil can do only so much.

No, these are hydraulic lifters. You cannot adjust them. I wish I could just adjust them, that would make life easier.

I used half a can of Seafoam in my KA24DE. The oil started leaking from the back like I put in a new Synthetic oil or something. I guess you can call it cleaning the stuff inside.

you can run your truck just fine w/ the ticking if it's not to bad of a tick. A loud tick, no.

If the people next to you at the stop light stare and laugh cause they can hear your ticking lifters, thats bad.

yeah dude sea foam it. Mine started to tick, poured in like 2 ounce. ran the car for 100 miles changed the oil, it came out hella black by the way, the tick was gone. it's good to add it right befor you change your oil.
