Hi all, getting ready to swap my good KA into a new shell and I've got a custom intake manifold for it which has no place for the Idle air control valve to mount up. I plan on just using the adjustment screw on the throttle body to keep the throttle plate slightly cracked to maintain idle, but will not having the IACV connected to the harness throw the computer for a loop? It's OBDI so it shouldn't be that sensitive but I'm still worried. Has anyone else on here run a custom intake with no idle control valve and if so did it give you any hassles? thanks in advance!

You have to have an IACV or it won't idle.

This is a long read but it will help you a lot.

The critical part: :)
Soon thereafter, an another amazing goodie arrived in the mail: Xcessive Motorsports had heard about the build, and asked if I'd run their custom-made intake manifold. This thing was designed for high-boost applications, so it got port-matched and polished in preparation for assembly as well.

Now, of course, at the time, there was no kit available for an IACV, and we were very concerned about stalling (coming back down to idle). So, without hesitation, Jason lopped off the entire IACV assembly from the stock intake manifold, and welded it to the bottom of the Xcessive manifold.

eesh, welding one on would make nervous. I would weld nuts on the inside instead so I could atleast unbolt it if I had to.

It WILL idle. I ran my car daily like this for almost 4 years. No problems. You just have to be patient since there is no idle control. What you do is crack the throttle plate by adjusting the screw on it to keep it open, you can adjust it so it idles at whatever you want (i had mine set to about 900rpms). Anyways the only thing is on cold starts, you need to hold the gas at about 1500-1600 rpms until the car gets up to its normal operating temperature. It is a lot more consistent without the IACV once it is warmed up. It does not stall coming back down to idle. You need to make sure the rpms are high enough with all the accessories on since there will not be anything there to automatically raise the idle when you turn on the heater and high beams etc.

If you want an IACV i have a plate that the IACV mounts to which you run a line to the intake manifold nipple and it will act pretty much the same way as stock. Either way is fine but the car WILL idle without the valve.

No big deal but if you don't want the extra work i would recommend hooking up the IACV some how.

I would agree with just hooking it up. It would save the headache later. I think it would suck especially in cold weather, having to hold the gas pedal in an ice cold seat early in the morning.

It does...half the reason I parted with my 1uzfe. It never started in the slightest bit of cold weather. I didn't even try on really cold days, because there was no point in freezing my a$$ off for what would end up being 15 min of flooding my motor with gas until it finally found a spark and start up.

my s14 sr is running with out an iacv. it kinda sucks though cause it cannot compensate the idle for higher engine loads, ex my idle is about 1100 with all the accessories off. blast the heat, turn on the lights, and bump the radio and that f*** down to like 900. i need a tune to conpensate for the maf i have to get the iacv back in range. but for now, it works just fine without it. just got to set the idle with the screw everyone in a while. i also adjusted the thermal pellet to open the blade more when the motor is cold.

It is a better practice to have to warm it up to normal operating temperature. Most engines are destroyed by starting them and driving off with no lubrication. At least this way you have to warm it up a bit before it will even stay running.

Either way. Everyone has their opinion and preference.

I am running Nistune for my EMS and when I removed it my car wasnt happy at all. After d!ck with it for a little while, I ended up putting it back on. I sapose with AEM or some similar EMS you might be able to do it.
