I think I found the problem, the timing chain is waaaaay loose. :tisk: Anybody got any tips to get the timing cover off and on without dropping the oilpan a little? :chuckle: Well I'm off to rip it apart. I'llcheck back later. :mad:Image

When I took the front cover off of my KA I bent the front lip of the pan down slightly to get the cover out.

Got it put together today. This was just too damn easy, I didn,t even have to break out the puller for the harmonic balancer :gapteeth: . 3 whacks with the 3# hammer and the cover was off. The tensioner had popped out and the spring was nowhere to be found. I assume it's in the oilpan. It it be O.K. in there for a while :chuckle: Pics to follow soon

Pull the motor. It takes just as much effort as doing it while its in. and as I remember you must remove oil pan to get the front cover off.

Assuming you have access to a hoist. or lots of ratcheting straps and a tree.

I didn't have to pull the pan or even loosen it up for that matter. On all the ones I've worked on before (even the Z's), the oilpan had to be at loosened at least a little. Didn't even damage the gaskets. She's running like a clock now. Thats why I said it was too easy. So far no leaks either, "knock on wood" :fap: Is this the smiley for that? :lolling: I disagree with pulling the motor as being just as easy. Theres the mount bolts, exhaust, starter, gas/heater hoses, rigging the hoist, manuvering it out & in (my shed has dirt/gravel floor) I do have 3/4 plywood tho for the occasion :) then you have the transmission bolts. :tisk: not all that unless it's a haffto case. ;)

Well the chain is loose again. New chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets. Would a failing pump cause this? The oil pressure is is getting sorta erratic lately.I'm not gonna drive it untill I tear it back down and see what the hell is going on. Did a valve adjust tho, could have put a silver dollar between a couple of them. No wonder it sounded like a cummins :squint:

Well dammit! The head has turned to s***. 5 of the cam tower bolt holes are stripped out smooth :tisk: :tisk: :tisk: I have 2 more heads here but I'm not sure if they are usable. Anybody got a good one here?
Also,
How how much clearance between the piston and valve?
I'm going to have the next head resurfaced and need to know how much I can shave off before having a problem.

I backed the mark up about a tooth and tried again.

Ahhh, the magic 11:25 position the tab should be in. Time to tighten the oil pump down and make sure she's still in time.

dizzy is next,

Image
notice the inside tab is pointing foward.

Image
the bright link is on 2 and the crank key is pointing up.

Well she's running good for now. I almost got ran over today by her. Thank God for old washing machines. Notice the 2 story post and torch bottles. I got a beer out of the cooler and was walking down the hill and heard gravel popping, wondering who was pulling in this early I looked around and my truck was about to run me over :ohno: Image

Yea, I usually put it in 1st gear when I park. But for some reason I forgot and left it in N. The truck is fine, I just had to bounce on the bumper a little. Now I got to get a new battery. I guess the last two weeks of 100+ temps cooked it. Something all the time :squint:

Some people use bricks, some use washing machines. I don't see a problem with that. :lolling:

Well, I'm glad they were there. A couple I got a month ago for a scrap run, I guess that one is pre smashed whitch means more room for more.
Got a battery today and three people in the store told me that it wouldn't fit my Nissan 720. I told them "you don't know MY Nissan  ". They said "hell if you want to buy it ,we'll sell it to you". O.K. I said. :werd: Image

A large part of "life". That's not the horn, it's a siren, barnyard animals, PA noise maker. I've got an oogah horn you can't see in the pic where the charcoal can used to be.

Well the head gasket is leaking some coolant from behind #4. I think I'll try blocking off the heater and run some of that stop-leak stuff through it for now. It may be a bad/cracked head :gotme . It's not leaking bad, just enough to be annoying. A gallon about every couple hunderd miles
Gotta go to SC for an install job at the BMW plant. About 2 weeks, harnesses and hardhats :squint: damn,I thought those days were long gone but it beats being laid off :yesnod. I'm taking the company truck, not my 720 tho....

Welcome to SC. Stop over and have a coffee if you get near Columbia! What city is the BMW plant in?

Sorry, I've been busy the last couple days. BMW is in Greer, just outside Greenville. I'll have to look it up and see how far away you are. Thanks for the invite. Due to time restraints, I prolly won't be able to make it. We'll see how it works out

Well, I'm back in TN. Sorry boatman, I couldn't sqeeze in enough time for the invite. That's how it goes when traveling on the bosses' dime  I'll prolly be back over there sometime next year doing another. They are expanding like crazy, putting out 500+ cars a day (10 hrs.) and have the capasity to do 1200 a day. They don't have enough supply area to meet that goal as of now. In the meantime, I've got to take the trash off in the 720. It's only a mile so it should be O.K. It lasted a while with the broken head bolt tho. :squint:

Well it's been awhile. Ol' gal has been running strong , just had to chase down a few wiring gremlins. :tisk: Now one of the relays under the pass. side of the dash sounds like a pissed off hornet when it's running. :wtf2:  Got to get the haynes manual and glasses out to see which one it is. Anybody else had a relay to do this? :gotme
