it has happened a few times in the last 2 weeks, when i satrt my car up, it doesnt happily rev to life, instead, it will continue to turn over until i give it gas, at which point it sounds very rough, like it is only firing on 2 or 3 cylinders. it will continue to run rough, and die when i let off the gas, unless i hold it at about 2.5-3k rpm for several minutes. so, now it basically does one of three things when i start it, it will happily rev up and idle fine, it will slowly crawl to life but idle and run fine (usually only if it's warm) or do the strange not starting thing. i honestly have no idea why it does either of the last two. no one has been able to answer this yet, so please help me! i am probably running about 50% rich (estimate, but if you stand behind the car when i start it, it will turn your legs black with soot) and still have the stock dp and 240sx cat. could the insanely rich mixture be clogging the cat or something? im completely stumped. also, i have no way (unless there is a way to adjust something on the car) of altering the fuel mixture, so i cant really do much about it. i guess ill go and buy a safc this week, see if i cant better the soot situation.

thanks, tim

you still have not told us about those ga16de cams in your CA18?

but i think it may be either your MAF is dirty, clean it with eectrical cleaner, or your TPS is gone or needs adjusting, coils could be shorting when hot, get the Factory Service Manul and go through the diagnosis sections for the sympptons you discribeed, check the Codes the ECU is displaying etc... if you are not comfortable with it take the FSM to a competant mechanic buddy or shop and have them look at it with the FSM in hand.

and tell me about using the GA16 cams, i never heard of them working before,

Your coils could be acting up as well as the powertransistor module.

Try this, see if there is a spark on all coils, if there is, remove the spark plugs and see if they have lots of gas resideo on them .I know my car runs rich, but it starts and runs fine.

some one said the it could be the MAF and I would agree with them, either clean it or if you have a spare one, replace it.

Try replacing your spark plugs to a different brand and see if the results will improve.

Good luck,

Oh MAN! I hope I am wrong, but this happened on my KA...(and a BroncoII once).....Check the oil bro...does it look like Chocolate milk? If so, its time for a rebuild - you are mixing coolant into your oil because of a blown gasket. :(

oh yeah, and about the ga16 cams, i really dont notice much of a difference, that could just be me though, ill have to get it to a dyno sometime and see if there is a power increase. (not that ive dynoed it before, but i could make a rough guess) i wouldnt really bother with them unless you get them for free, like i did.
