help my engine sometimes idles ok then badly with black smoke comming out of the tail pipe and burns alot of fuel:help

What kind of car and is it fuel injected or carbed.

A loose MAF connection perhaps?

Find the box, (location depending on type/yr of car), tap on it when its running poorly and see if it gets better/worse.
