I will be taking delivery of a 2009 Murano in another capital city some 700km away and will be driving back. I would like to know the best way to run the engine during the trip back home. The advice I've received so far is to thrash the car, drive it at variable speeds, or just drive it normally. One more question I've used Molybond additive in my old skyline for about 300K with no problems, do you think there could be an issue with this engine, many thanks

It's a good question, and one I am curious about as well. Got my new Murano in New Jersey this past weekend. It's been sitting in the garage all week and next week I am driving it straight to Atlanta, GA.

The manual advises against long drives at constant speeds early on. This is a 900-mile drive.

Will I really be doing damage to the engine?

Thanks

Just don't use cruise control, it's not the speed but throttle that shouldn't remain constant, so on the highway you need to vary the throttle, on/off every 10 minutes or so, which will affect speed of course, but it's the throttle that you need to focus on, push down say half throttle, then fully release, then repeat a few times every 10 minutes. This is very important for your piston rings to seat properly, if you don't do this your engine could never break-in properly sacrificing efficiency, power and burning oil prematurely, or it could just take longer to break in.

Nothing to get worried about, but be sure to follow the break in recommendations in your owners manual exactly and you'll be fine.

This is great advice, thank you so much.

Following your instructions will help break the monotony of the long drive, so thanks for that as well!

Been doing almost nothing but hi-way driving since I got mine last week.Pretty much what I was doing. Driving the limit for between 5 and 10 minutes, depending on traffic, then would accelerate and level out for a bit then slow back down and cruise for a few minutes and so on.I know when we rebuilt engines or got a new one, we had a procedure for breaking them in, to seat the rings. Not sure how that applies today, so just follow the manual.
