Running hot and loud knocking

Ok, I need some help here. I started my Z this morning and it made a loud knocking sound 3 times and then quit . A I got down the road the it stared to run hot and the knocking got constant. The car has coolant and there was presure on the lines. Good on oil. What might be my problem? It is a 93 NA with 170,000 miles.

Can you tell what part of the motor the knocking is coming from? top? bottom?

People, when stuff like this happens, avoid driving it more. You could be causing more damage. Diagnose quickly, isolate noises, then troubleshoot accordingly.

Check the easy stuff first. Drain the oil, look for debris
Do a compression check.
Check for any oil in the coolant.
